Was watching the end of the penalties with germany & argentina and heard a loud bang - tv went off and a burning smell from the back.

sounds like a capacitor has gone.

we are building an extension at the minute and were going to upgrade to a 37 lcd --- but that needs to be done shortly instead of sept.

    so - recommendations please folks.

37-40 inch - usual hd-ready - using for noraml tv and an mce machine.
Am liking the samsung or Panasonics.
    Is komplete my best bet?
What about that German website -- trinsic ??? whats the web address.

    really appreciate this folks

Watch the sound level you can get from the flat screens builtin speakers (you don't mention a sound system) - we have a flatscreen at work for showing DVD's to kids and it can't compete with the music system in the shop at all.

my opinion is, for what it's worth, samsung are some of the best bang for the buck. good picture, and nice prices.

Panasonic are excellent too, but from what i've seen they are a bit more expensive..

if i was buying it would be one of them..don't like sony(overpriced), anddon't tink a lot of the othes match the build quality of those

Reminds me of what happened to my Sony just prior to "having" to buy a new 32" LCD (Samsung R71 btw) . . . who knew that watering a geranium plant with one of those spray thingies would be a bad idea . . . . . . funny thing . . . it went BANG too !! :D  ;)

The missus is delighted with the new TV - thinner and doesn't attract dust like a CRT . . .

By the way I agree with Red Alert on the audio issue - weak best describes it. A seperate audio system highly recommended.

My 32" philips widescreen went "bang" yesterday with a puff of smoke after just 7 years. Not ready to go flat just yet - could there be much wrong with it or would i be just throwing good money after bad?:(

Hard to know. Depends what went bang, and if anything else was affected by the bang! I guess it could be the flyback transformer.

Zener might shed some help in this area.
