Dont really understand what you are asking. Where did you get this copy of Windows XP? Have a look in Control Panel->Regional and Language Options and select the Language toolbar and then click the Details Button. Whats listed in that box?

Sounds like you have an Arabic copy of windows. No way to change the language, you can only change the keyboard settings so you can input english characters, etc.

If you bought it, return it for an english version. But sounds like you got a pirated copy, in which case you got what you (didn't) paid for. :p

You should be able to change the language back to English - typical XP installations should contain all languages. Go to the regional settings in Control Panel (it's the globe icon), and set everything to English.

typical XP installations should contain all languages.
They should but unfortunately, they don't.

You can change regional settings and input language but all that will do is change the default currency, time and date displays, daylight savings settings, etc... an arabic version of windows will predominantly be in arabic. Error messages, toolbars, menu's and instructions will all be in arabic. I had the same problem with my German computer coming with a german OEM version of XP.

You can buy a language pack to convert it to english but it's nearly as expensive as a copy of non-OEM windows. My CD key worked with a friends install disk so I don't see any reason it shouldn't do the same for you. As far as i'm aware this would also be perfectly legal as long as you have a legitimate serial.

    What legologic said ^.

Just go and buy XP like everyone else instead of downloading it.

Apologies then. Just not many Arabic copies of Windows for retail in Ireland I imagine. So I added 2+2 and got 5. ;)

Is Arabic the first language in the list?

It might have defaulted to it, stranger things have happened.

My current XP-Pro PC is entirely in English, except for the 'Panneau de configuration'. :D

He bought it in Dubai for all you guys know. People are so quick to judge sometimes. Of course, I imagine there are one or two people in this forum, given its nature, who never leave their home, let alone the country, so such a possiblility seems remote...

WTF you on about I didnt download it.

If you didn't download it. Where did you get it? If you got it legit then you should contact the company that sold it to you. If they give you and lip just say that maybe you should ring Microsoft instead.

I bought a machine before and the people who sold it to me were using 1 version of XP to install onto the machines and wouldn't give the disk. After telling that windows said I should of gotten a disk and prehaps I should ring microsoft for it they handed it over sharpish.

I got it in regional and language options.

For some reason it was on Arabic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Odd. Most copies of XP don't install Middle East or Far East language sets by default. Was it an OEM or Retail copy?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭joebhoy1916

    Oem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

    OEM

Basically if it came preinstalled on a PC it's OEM. If you went to a shop and bought it and installed yourself it's a retail version.

    More info here

I'd love to go to Dubai! Anyways, don't forget to turn automatic updates on your PC. With the problems you had with sound card, devices etc, you need to keep everything up to date. ;)

you can get all your XP/everything updates from The Software Patch

Don't worry joebhoy, I understand j00. You can't update XP from the MS website as you need a legitimate copy, but you can download the security and software patchs as they are released from that website. If its in arabic there is nothing you can do about that afaik, get Linux (Suse is excellent) buy a copy of XP or get another free copy off the net or a mate and hope its in your language.

    WinXPProPC_COA.jpg

The XXX 123456 number on the left hand side

    eg:

Microsoft X08-48123 WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION
Microsoft X08-48124 WINDOWS XP PRO OEM
Microsoft X08-73060 Windows Xp Professional Software License

Watch out though there is an X number for each bit of kit and the whole package.
X08-46836 -- is a retail package for Windows XP Professional

There are many others - what does google say about yours ?

Arabic is a base version of windows - LIP do not apply and you can't change the base version without a corporate license, To change the langague you need the MUI. Otherwise you have to buy another copy of windows.
    http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/DrIntl/faqs/Muifaq.mspx#MUIques4
How can I acquire Windows MUI?

The Windows XP/2000 MUI is sold only through Volume Licensing programs such as the Microsoft Open License Program (MOLP / Open), Select, and Enterprise agreement (or with a new computer as an OEM version at customer request). It is not available through retail channels.

Buy you can add a FARSI LIP to Arabic Office. ( hang about, isn't Iran one of the Axis of Evil - how did George allow that  - maybe Bill & co told him it was for Persia. )

Microsoft Windows XP Language Interface Pack (LIP) is a high-quality, localized "skin" for emerging or minority language markets, such as Catalan, Lithuanian, and Thai. Based on MUI technology, LIP provides the desktop user with an approximately 80% localized user experience by translating a reduced set of user interface elements. LIP is installed on a licensed copy of Windows and a fixed base language.

    http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/DrIntl/faqs/LIPFaq.mspx

List of langague packs and the base versions of windows it's installed over.
