As you all know Enda Kenny was found out to have mislead both the Dail and the public today. He told the whole Dail about how he was mugged and was scared and how he'd always remember the sound of the knife being unsheathed etc.
It now appears that the incident took place in Kenya, 12 years ago. He gave the impression that it was recent and in Ireland.
He clearly did this solely to boost Fine Gael's anti-crime reputation, which it really angers me. He purposefully tried to dupe the Dail and treated the public like idiots. What do you think?

**** this was ment for politics. Could it be moved?

Where are the links? Are you sure he wasn't trying to show that he was mugged too(as he understood how it felt)?

Its funny, I googled it and could find no mention but it was on the headlines of two papers today. The mugging story was in the headline two days ago and the "revelation" was in one of todays.
I'd say that the dail records will be up soon and then I can give you a link.

Where, specifically, did he give the impression that it occured in Ireland?
Or was that simply an assumption people made?

I saw this on RTE1 the other night on Oireachtas Report. He described his personal experience of what it felt like to be muggers and have a knife drawn on you. I didn't see how he misled the public as he was descibing the experience. You do not forget such an experience. I was attacked and mugged in London nearly 20 years ago and I wont forget it. My recall of the event is as clear as if it had happened yesterday.

The point he was making is that you don't forget that sort of thing and there are around 500 people experiencing this every week

If he did attempt to mislead the Dail and the public, then he's only taking a leaf from Fianna Fail's book.

    If you can't beat them...

He was merely describing what it was like to be mugged. He made no reference to where or when it happened as it was irrevelant to the experience. Others assumed that it happened recently in Ireland - they mislead themselves.

    Enda Kenya. :D

    :D:D

    Very good.

He was, at best, 'economical with the truth'. He clearly gave the impression that the incident happened in Ireland, it was in the midst of a debate on crime in Ireland. I mean, can Bertie now stand up and say 'the health service is the best in the world and anyone who says otherwise is lying', and then mutter 'I mean of course the Swedish health service'? It's a nonsense to suggest he didn't mislead, but hardly the worst sin in the Dail lately.

Misleading the public, come on now, that's clearly a little stretch there. I'm sure if you went out on the street of Dublin right now and start asking members of the public, most of them wouldn't give a flying f***. So what if it happened in Kenya. He was using his experience of being mugged as he experienced it first hand, and was somewhat relevant in regards to the new crime legislation FG were trying to bring in.

He said it happened 12 years ago

They're all a pack of squiggly lying bastards, I wouldnt beleive his name was Enda Kenny unless he showed me his passport and even then it was probably bought in exchange for a few brown envelopes.

Enda Kenya I like that :)

None of it matters anyway, crime, health, transport...SSIA money should see FF close to an overall majority and another stint of Bertie...

Only a fraction of SSIA money given out so far, the flood will be next year, when Luas is in profit, port tunnel working etc. etc. and matters like Mr A will be a distant memory.

    Put your house on it...

Ha!! you'd like that would you?

As for the health and transport, well I can't see many people rushing to the ballet boxes in FF honour, for their fine work in these areas.

Waiting lists coming down, the dogs on the street remember what Labour did with social welfare increases in their last budget, and people wondering should they buy a second or third house or a new SUV?

Never bother with mid term polls...they only exist to give the opposition something to talk about.

The only thing I would put my house on would be that the 2 papers that reported this as front page news would be the independant and the hearld...or to save me having to refer to the same paper twice...the FF news letter.

Independant media my ass :p Owned by Tony O'Reilly, still fuming over FG government awarding Eircell the major mobile phone provider contract instead of him and his consortium in the 90's, which in the long run, could have cost him billions (especially if he resisted takeover from Vodaphone/02).

Now a major media mogul, strong FF supporter and donater.

Looks like at least some past Governments just couldn't be bought ;)

    True.

Though speaking of phone companies, how much DID Denis O'Brien make during the Rainbow Coalition's tenure and why did that tribunal on the Iarnord Eireann/ESAT fiasco get shelved?

I just read about this as reported in the indo, never once did Enda Kenny refer to the incodent taking place in Ireland, so how this could be consturde as lying, misleading, or dishonest beggers belief.

what he said was " I do not know if the minister has ever been attacked. I was mugged once by two people, high on drugs, with a knife, which was a pretty daunting prospect" in which he never refered to where or when it took place he was merely describing the fear which one suffers while being mugged, and actually asking the minisiter for justice, If he knew what it was like to be attacked, during a debate on Fine Gael's Home Defence Bill, therefore I suggest the OP change the tags of

lying misleading dishonest because infact the only person misleading anyone here is the OP

lol...refer to the one FG corruption scandal involving one party member...do you want me to make a list of all the FF governments corruption tribunals and the hundreds of names involved including several members of the current government who managed not get caught out yet beyond reasonable doubt and the ones who have been forced to resign because of revelations...or will I just go through the Haughy government cabinet...I'll make a list of his government members who HAVN'T been linked to scandal...the list is much shorter...

The Taoiseach was the ringleader ffs!! Running the country as his own private company! :D How could anyone ever vote for these crooks again? And not only a corrupt party, but also an incompetent one!!

Give me a break conor...you seem to scower boards for political threads to spew your FF rhetoric and try to defend all these injustices suffered by the Irish public through solely FF governments with lame-duck responses or by avoiding the unanswerable questions by diverting to something about FG (as you have done above) or Labour, Greens, SF or anyone else to get out of a hole.

I'm sure you're some political member in FF, but come election time, I honestly don't think the Irish public will put up with this governments time wasting and money wasting anymore...

I know I wont and I know who I'll be voting for!

Just goes to show how bad the Indo is.

It's all about context. The reference came in the middle of a Dail debate about crime. Now I am certain that they were not talking about crime on Nairobi. The clear inference one drew from Kenny's contribution was that the incident happened in Ireland. What next, Bertie saying he praised Joe Higgins because 'nimwit' means 'genius' in Swahili and he was thinking of Africa when he made that comment? Enda was caught offside, marginally because it's not that big a deal, but still silly.

Ah, history lessons? You go back to the Haughey era, and I'll dig up the FG/Sweepstakes links (international fraud over generations, much more entertaining) and we'll compare notes.

Anyway, getting on topic, maybe Enda was attacked in Kenya because he told one of his more infamous 'jokes'?

So if I am talking to you and I say I know what its like to be involved in a car crash, some years back, you automatically assume the crash took place in Ireland. And when I letter tell you in fact it took place in Nigeria, I have in some way lied to you and misled you.

**Actually was in a car accident in Nigeria(totally of topic but true)

If anything, this topic shows how desperate FF are becoming to distract people from their slump in the opinion polls, backbenchers dissenting and the PD's failing apart.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 320 ✭✭Trode

To be fair, if you're talking about crime in Ireland and someone makes a big deal about being a victim of a crime, it's only rational to assume it took place in Ireland, because if it didn't, why would you bring it up? Kenny was either being deliberately misleading or irrelevant here, but I suppose "Enda Kenny Irrelevant" wouldn't be much of a news story.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

what i get from it is that he is saying he knows first hand how terrifying it is to be mugged

But if we're dealing with road safety in Ireland and you were condemning safety here and pointed out that you had suffered yourself once, and then I found out it was actually on the other side of the world, then I would feel misled. It's all about context. Debates about crime control in Ireland should not be taken up by anecdotes about crime elsewhere.

But either way we can give the matter too much analysis. I think he misled the Dail, but it was only a minor offence and everyone uses a bit of dramatic licence - it wasn't in the Bill Clinton 'I did not have sex with that woman' bracket of misleading a house.
