SCOTUS declares Gitmo trials illegal

I don't see much changing for the prisoners either. Bush will still seek congressional approval for the special tribunals, which would probably amount to little more than show trials anyway.

I don't see much changing for the prisoners either. Bush will still seek congressional approval for the special tribunals, which would probably amount to little more than show trials anyway.

The thing to remember is that the only reason they were being given any sort of trial at all was because the Bush Administration was forced down that path as well.

Initially, they were quite happy to hold peopel indefinitely without even the prospect of trial. The type of trial that has just been nixed was proposed as a way forward noly after the Administration was told the "no trial, indefinitely" option wasn't acceptable.

So having gone from no trial to an unacceptable trial, SCOTUS has forced POTUS to go back to his original wishes (no trial) and effectively start over. A speedy resolution was pegged by one analyst on CNN last night as being abou 5-7 months. At this rate, it won't take much more before Bush's term of office ends....which is far as he could ever string his "no trial, indefinitely" anyway.
