www.crucial.com/eu as posted above - click the 'scan my system' icon and open the exe, perfectly safe and tells you all you need to know. dead simple too, no flicking through manufacturers/models etc:D

by the way, should i get someone in a shop to insert it or could i do it myself?

is like a soundcard whereby you have to earth yourself before putting it in?

    thanks again.

Yes, it's recommended to touch some bare metal (or get one of those wrist thingys if you're that concerned) before touching any exposed electronics like that, and don't wear or do anything that could easily cause static electricity.

TBH sometimes I forget about the earthing thing and have yet to kill any hardware. If you just don't touch any metal contacts and just hold the module by the sides you'll be fine.

It's easier than putting in a sound card - no screws or anything.

I have a quick RAM question, so I thought I'd post it in here instead of start a new thread.

Basically, I have 512 MBs of RAM and want to upgrade to 1 GB.

My PC has 4 slots for RAM, two of which are taken up by 256MB sticks. Before this I'd never really had occasion to examine my RAM slots before so I was kinda surprised to find that the other two slots are occupied...

The sticks in these slots are quite a bit smaller than the 256 MB sticks and are pretty bare looking. This lead me to believe that they might be placeholders but when I took them out and started up my PC I was met with a worrying beeping noise, and no reaction from my monitor. I shtuck the two mystery shticks back in and everything ran normally.

So, what the hell are these things?

(By the by, for whatever reason, only RDRAM is compatible with my machine so I have to hunt down some of this ridiculously expensive outdated crap...sigh.)

    Anybody?

Its probably C-RIMM (Continuity RIMM). Rambus manfacturers the type of ram that fits your computer and its type cannot have any unused slots on the motherboard, so basically its just a ram module with any chips on it. You best leave it there. ;)

    Rambus?
    ...
I feel so sorry for you right now ;)

But it's ok to replace it with more RAM, right?

Of course, its just with that particular type of RAM, all the slots have to be filled. Good luck.

Ruu The link I posted shows how much ram will fit in your computer and what type you need, PC2100 DDR266 184 pin

so is this the only type that will work for my machine or can the PC and pin vary?

(haven't a clue about memory, sorry)

any chance someone has some for sale? 512mb preferably...

    thanks again.

You can use any speed DDR RAM; as long as it's 184 pin (virtually all IIRC), it'll default to the lowest speed stick.
    E.g. if you buy a PC3200 (ddr400) stick, it'll default down to PC2100 speeds.

Where's the best place to buy this?

i have searched many sites but have been getting huge differences in price and some of the details are slightly different so i'm not sure if it'll work in my pc.

which site in general would be the cheapest for ram that delivers to ireland?

    thanks folks

^^ A stick of 512Mb will cost you €44 and free deliver from shop4memory.com, they are based in Kildare afaik. They are excellent imo.
