Hi Has anyone been to New York lately. I am thinking about bringing the girlfriend within the next 2 weeks (between mon-thurs) and was just wondering what it would cost? I know it depends on what you spend but has anyone done it on a tight budget without staying in kips???

Doing it within the next two weeks, on a budget - that's going to be quite tough..

I stayed in the Hotel Pennsylvania last time I was there. Same thing, Thursday to Monday. Flew into Newark with Continental. The train from there brings you into Manhattan (Penn Station) and you exit straight across the road from the hotel

The hotel is enormous but it is old and basic. If all you want is a clean room to lay your head and a shower then it's perfect and you will not get cheaper than this in midtown manhattan. It's 1 block from the Empire state and across the road from Madison Square Garden. 2 minutes walk to Times Square. Location wise it is absolutely perfect and it cost about $450. Flights will be a minimum of $1000 around this time of year so you should be budgeting around $1500 for the 4 days. You will get cheaper accommodation uptown but you're nowhere near the main spots then and will spend the difference on transport.

I've stayed in much much nicer hotels in midtown manhattan (Marriott and Hilton) but my company were paying for these. If you have the money spare then go ahead and get a nice hotel but everything you need is outside the door of the Penn and all you're gonna do is sleep there!!

    Enjoy. It's a great place.

It is quite difficult to do New York on a budget. Have you considered Chicago or Boston? Your money will go much further in either of these cities.

Myself and herself were considering New York and just found it to be too expensive at short notice. The key is booking at least 6 months in advance - we are now looking at going in January of next year (Paddy's Day was borderline extortion).
