I do it without thinking, it has nothing to do with flirting. Usually I do it if my hair feels funny/messy/not right/weird. I also sometimes do it when I'm nervous.

ive generally found it to be true. apparently its got something to do with the subconcious desire to touch you, which they cant (at first ) so they touch themselves. really though you have to put it in context with all the other signals, such as if theyre standing at an angle to you to emphasise their figures (cocking their head at an angle is a part of this) or crossing their legs towards you when sitting next to you while doing the whole moistening of the lips thing.
though that said the clincher is physical contact. if a girls twirling the hair while taking every oppertunity to touch or brush off you your definently in there. women generally dont go near let alone touch guys regularly theyre not interested in

at least in my experience, and i havent been arrested yet!

I reckon girls running their hands through their hair is generally a self comforting habit. They do it if they're nervous.... it's a kind of defensive gesture, half putting their hands up to defend/comfort themselves.

I get really nervous or anxious sometimes so I would subconsciously do it a lot of the time, I would also do as a neurotic thing towards my looks, and again I totally agree with what constitutionus said.
So I guess if a girl is touching her hair its one of the above

Ditto to what most of the girls here have already said. I do it purely out of habit when I'm concentrating/pondering/tired. Usually it's winding my hair around my fingers, which has often landed me in awkward situations where people have misinterpreted it... I can assure you, it's really not flirting.

Although I'm sure some people use it as a cunning technique, seeing as you lot all seem to fall for it

It isn't running finger through hair it is exagerating head movement often exagerated further with movement of the hair. People often miss the full information from such studies

I always regarded myself as being well able to read female body language but lately I so blatantly wrong about the signs a woman was giving off that I have now decided to poke out my eyes so I may never even think about body language again.
