    Hi can anyone help?
My sky+ functions are not working. I get a message "system fault sky+ playback and recording are unavailable, please call for assistance"

I have tried a reboot and a forced software upgrade but still the same.

    did you ring sky?
the only time i ever saw that on mine was when the box was newly installed and the the sky+ functiuonality hadnt yet been activated.

could just be a simple case of having to get someone to "flick a switch", so to speak

Phoned them, they told me to switch it on and off. Then do a full reboot. After that they said they would need to send someone out. I asked if they coud try sending the signal and I was told this was only done on install and some one would have to come out to look at it. Good eh?
Any ideas as to whatcould be causing the problem?

You could try a Planner Rebuild or a Full System Reset from the Installers Menu, you will lose all recorded and planner entries if you choose the Full System Reset.

Sounds like a dead hard disk. It's a fairly common problem with some boxes. It usually happens when you plug the box out (and possibly in) at the mains and some form of surge kills the hard disk. If this is the case you will have lost your recored programs. It is possible to replace the disk yourself if it's out of warranty, you can find some information about how to do this on the net.

Cheers for that, I think you could be right.
This all seemed to start after installing broadband this morning. I have disconnected the broadband and put everything bach to the way it was but it still stays the same.
Where is the best place to get a new harddrive?

If I wanted to replace the hard drive with a bigger one which would be the best option?

I have justread that if you format the disk in your pc then replace it into the box it may work? Its got to be worth a shot?
If not the think I will go for an Maxtor DiamondMax 9 80Gb 6Y080L0 Hard Drive

Yeah, definately worth a shot. I remember hearing before that the DiamondMax 9 drives don't work at all...have you heard reports of them working yourself?

I am still waiting for my new HD to arrive but am wondering if all my trouble was started with the sky software update that has caused many sky+ boxes to have problems? As this is the box supplied from sky should they not be liable for replacement costs if it was there fault it went wrong?

Nope, probably a power surge killed your HDD, nothing to do with software.

Wrong hard drive arrived yesterday, decided to fit anyway and box now working again. Thanks for the advice!:D
Still think it was too much of a coincidence that my drive died the same time as everyone was having trouble with the new software upgrade?:(
