Sorry to start another thread on supplements...

At the moment I am taking a protein shake after my work out, (it's Instant Nutrition's Instant Whey) I find it quite good but someone recommended that I try a weight gain. I'm 5'6" and don't have a massive build, I'm looking to bulk up but want to keep a very defined build. I generally eat quite a healthy diet.

I've heard that weight gainers contain alot of carbs so to help you gain weight (hence the name, ain't I clever!!), will they make me put on fat as opposed to just muscle. I dont' want to put on the fat as surely this would reduce the definition in my muscles.

Is it better to go with just a whey/ protein shake or to move onto a weight gain. I'm also takign no-xplode pre-workout.

I allways found weight gainers to be nothing but a rapid way of getting fat. Most of them seem to contain sugar as thier bulking agents and as such wouldnt be the best health-wise or in terms of quality weight gain. You'd be better sticking to a good diet and supplementing with a quality protein mix(such as whey). As whey is absorbed so quickly by teh body you might want to consider mixing with Casein milk protein which slows the uptake,a cheap brand is CAsilan90 available from Tesco's and most chemists.80% whey to 20% Casein is a good mix.

some weight gainers get all their carbs from suger and other crap sources so your probably just better off takin whey

some of them are good. N Large is decent, I've been using that for a while. You need carbs too to provide your body with energy after your workout. As Degsy said, get one that doesn't get its carbs from sugars.

Straight after a workout, the simple carbs in weight gainers are fine. I have to say that I have found them very difficult to drink though (they fill me up so much I need to lie down for a while and can't eat anything else for hours). Much easier to eat more food, spread throughout the day if you want to bulk up.
