Not as much as they used to be. You can get one for about €100 (excluding shipping, so get discs too to make it worthwhile).

Personally, I'm waiting for HDD recorders to drop in price. In the mean time I use my Archos AV420 to record and watch.

Who needs a recorder when some helpful people post the torrents?

If you record something from tv for your own use, is that legal? If you download the torrent (which someone else recorded from tv) for your own use, then whats the harm?

Maybe people believe that if you loan a dvd to a mate you should be prosecuted?

Interesting point on the whole filesharing debate though.

Get a mate to record for you maybe someone on here? have only got VCR recording though so no good to you.

Thats an interesting one. When we used to record from TV for personal use using VCR was that illegal?

It depends on the country but in most places it's fine to 'time-shift' and record it to watch it later for personal use.

Recording it for someone else though isn't "personal use" but don't expect the men in black to come beating down your room any time soon for VCR recordings.

Interesting topic that deserves it's own thread.
