Was delighted to hear Michael Murphy reading some news bulletins on RTE Radio1, as I hadn't heard anything of him for years. I remember seeing him on RTE1 a few years back and he looked as though he was recovering from a major illness. Anyone know what happened, as I always thought he was one of the best newsreaders RTE had.

Absolutely one of the best newsreaders. Clear diction, smooth delivery, he does it very well.

Not sure why he comes and goes from the RTÉ roster, tbh. Is he freelance rather than staff?

    DMC,

Last time I'd seen him on RTE was at least a few years ago and he looked very thin and pale and seemed to be having a hard time just getting through the bulletin
He was on Radio1 recently and his voice still sounded strained, as if he was always struggling for breath.

    Hopefully he'll be ok.

Good old Michael Murphy - was too glad to hear him back for the first time on Saturday about three weeks ago. Here is is 10 years ago on RTÉ News's virtual set in 1996:

Haven't heard from him in about four years either - I'm glad others have noted his return. He is the consummate professional and not dissimilar to John Finnerty, he works/ed in the industry of media training and television presentation. He is/was a lecturer at the Bil Keating Centre. Some info from their site:

Michael joined RTÉ as a Continuity Announcer on Radio 1 in 1971. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed newsreader, reading news in Irish and English on radio and television for which he won the N.A.D. award. In 1980 he became a television Producer and Director, working in RTÉ’s Light Entertainment Department, then to RTÉ 1where he produced such programmes as ‘S.B.B. on Tour’, ‘Access Community Drama’ and ‘Access Community Television’ for which he won the Prix Jeunese Internationale and a Jacobs Award. In 1990, he returned to the newsroom as Senior Newcaster.

I hope he is okay. It'd be great if he made a return to television news - his distinguished equivalent Ken Hammond just cannot hack any form of questioning whatever. Michael was always great.

Legend. The only newsreader who could do news for the deaf as intended.

    Mike.

all he has to say is "here is the news"
and i am convinced a major catastrophe has occurred.
    a bit less gravitas required

I like that. It's simple and very old school.

He's on the Late, Late Show tonight, 11 September 2009. He is an extremely eloquent man and speaks with immense poignancy and honesty.

    God bless him.

Wasn't Michael Murphy inspiring this evening on the Late, Late.
I had no idea he had gone through what he has or that he continues to experience the side effects of his treatment.

He was unbelievably brave and unselfish in highlighting the issue of prostate cancer and all that goes with it.

For him to be able to be so honest, genuine and open has earned him, I am sure, the respect of many of this country's RTE listenership. Personally, I think his interview was inspirational and admirable. I would love to be able to wish him well and tell him myself however I've had difficulty finding a link to his programme, thereby being able to send an email. If anyone can help me with that please feel free to let me know.

Congratulations Michael on a fantastically, honest and informative interview to be immensely proud of.

He's a legend all right. Almost as good as John Finnerty, who retired last year.

Would put Michael Murphy in the same group of brilliant, professional newsreaders as people like Ken Hammond.

Clear, non-fussy, concise. A deliverer of the news as opposed to a personality a la Miriam-on the front page of glossy magazines- O'Callaghan and Sharon Ni Bheolain.

Jean Byrne has also entered that group in my view. Stop wearing attire that becomes the news. You deliver a very important collection of information that determines the pursuits of fishermen, rescue services etc. By all means, wear the funky stuff on a night out. But don't lower the importance of the information you are broadcasting by taking attention away from it.

Finnerty hasn't retired. Heard his voice an hour ago on Radio 1.

Maybe you are thinkin of Ken Hammond?

How does a female newsreader wearing nice clothes distract the viewers from the story?

I'm talking about Jean Byrne presenting the weather wearing that dress with all the cuts in the material.

Very hard to concentrate on the map of Ireland when she's wearing that.
