Grading tonight for TKD Black Tag - Blow some steam

Just need to blow some steam off here.

I'm grading tonight for my black tag in ITF TKD. Right now, I'm ploughing my way through Korean, technical definitions of stances and moves. Phew, it's after getting so complicated compared to when I started out on this trip 4 1/2 years ago :D

I love this sport, and I love the people I've met doing it. I would never have thought all that time ago that black belt would loom on my horizon. Yet here I am years later, with a dodgy knee, and my own kids class. It's been a voyage that I'm sure many of you will identify with, regardless of your style of MA.

I really want to do well tonight, it's a matter of pride now. Roll on Christmas and my next grading.

Best of luck with the grading. Hope it goes well.

It certainly starts to get harder as you move up the grades, doesn't it? I graded for (and passed) my read tag last saturday week.

Best of luck! Who is grading you? I remember going for my black tag many moons ago (1993 to be exact!)

Thanks all for your good wishes.

The hardest part of the grading was watching my little yellow tag kids go through their paces. I felt like I had so much riding on their performance.

As to my own, it went really well. In fact, we were cut short in the one-step sparring due to time considerations, and I had worked hard to develop some nice variations for that. Regular sparring was fine, and theory turned out to be quite easy.

For the poster that asked, I was graded by Paul Delea Vth degree, and Ken Leahy IVth degree.

How long 'til you find out the outcome?

Well I got the nod last night unofficially, but I'll be told officially on Thursday, with a detailed breakdown of how I got on and what needs to be worked on

Congratulations. Black belt is a HUGE step up.

I got my black belt last March and the standard they expect is unreal. You shouldn't rush this grading as it is almost as if you are improving by as much you improved since you were a yellow belt again. They just expect a lot before they give you that black belt.

Why did is done in TKD grades, and indeed why I used to do it, I will never know!

The change is done in front of all the class, I suppose mainly for motivation. Plus, my instructor will then go through the grading report in detail with me.

Neither are reasons for not telling a person if they passed a grading or not.

I don't understand what you're asking. I have been told.

I'm not asking anything, I'm just commenting on the fact that people are often keep waiting (for no real reason) before they are told if they passed their grading or not, particularly for black belt gradings.

    Oh ok.

I do know that the day I'll go for my black belt (this Christmas) in the TKD centre in Dublin, I will be told on the day.

I was always kept waiting. There was also "the video has to go the the USA" or some such nonsense for black belt when you knew it was the guy in front of you making the decision!

Cool, best of luck with it.

LOL at that! If the guy in front of you wasn't making the decision why were you paying him to be there?

Don't I know it Tim..... now!

It does seem daft doesn't it.

That's one of the real pluses with the INTA as an organisation. You're being graded by two 7th degrees and one 6th degree. (By the time I grade, it might even be one 8th degree and two 7th degrees). If they can't make a decision about you, then who can??

Well done, good luck at Christmas. God I would go mad if they didn't tell me then and there, cause I'd be dying to know. I think its my instructor that does the grading in our class he's a fourth dan, also a few 2nd dans too. (my friend is a 2nd dan she got it on her 16th birthday, we had to go to England so she and the others could go for their back belts, fortune !!!!!):D

It was always a pain in the ass alright but is it still done because thats what happened to us, it'll happen to you now?
Like Dudara said, thankfully you get the results of BB gradings on the day, imagine the stress of waiting on THOSE results.

Dudara, make sure you train in a sauna if you plan to grade in Dec:D , the heat, humidity and general lack of air in the TKD Center is unbelievable.

    Congrats dudara!!

It won't be long to the BB grading!!

You should be careful not to burn yourself out building up to the event!!

    All the best!! ;)

I know! I went up there to see the last batch of black belt gradings at the start of this month. It's a claustraphobic place all right.
