Everytime I use my pc now ,it shuts itself down after a while.

If I'm lucky I can catch a glimpse of a screen that gives a 30 second option to cancel.

I ran panda scan from the net and it only found two spyware cookies
I'm running norton antivirus and firewall.

Is there a specific program to get rid of this ??

    Thanks

    Brian.

    blaster.gif

    This the error you're getting?

If so, its a virus (blasterworm) that exploits a hole in windows xp. You need to remove it and get the latest service pack for windows. Disconnect your router/modem so you can't be connected to the internet and it shouldn't shut down.

Blaster used to cause shutdowns because of flaws in the coding. It's not the only virus that will cause this problem.

Can you boot to safe mode? If so try and log in, run system restore and see if it solves the prob.

If sucessful, scan your machine apon the first sucessful boot.. oh and McAfee & symantec have missed things that AVG have picked up. Personally I would reccomend kaspersky. McAfee, Trend, Symantec... they all use this engine.

Oh and do what EWheelChair says and patch up!

I think the countdown one was Sasser, wasnt it? You can disable RPC (or at least changing what action will be taken. Click Start, Run and type services.msc in the box, then scroll down to Remote Procedure Call, right click on it and select Properties. Open the Recovery Tab and select "Take No Action" from the drop down menus. Use a removal tool from Symantec to remove the virus. I thought I had that service disabled, but I do have RPC Locator disabled. Have a look here. Good luck.

Sasser was the most common cause of this issue. If you google for it, you'll find multiple fixes for it.

I think you should have time to open a command prompt and type in
"shutdown -a" to abort the shutdown and apply the relevant patches.
To save time use the windows key and r to open a RUN dialog and type CMD to open the command prompt.
