Was reading an article in CAI's newspaper about the breeding population of wild boar in England.Apparantly they've been escaping from farms for years and in some cases were released by animal welfare activists and are now breeding truly wild. There's talk of an open season and regulating the minimum-sized round etc to hunt them.Personally i've allways wanted to shoot wild boar(and eat them too).Would it be feasible to stock the irish countryside with this species?

Isn't deliberate introduction of non-native species into the wild illegal?

True, but they used to be native. Hunted to extinction I believe. You would be re-introducing them if thats alllowed. Heard tell of a couple mooching around near Boyle in the forrest park, dont know if thats a myth though:confused:
Theres certanly a couple of wild ostridges knocking around south Wicklow, Wexford:rolleyes:

They're fun to hunt. Sometimes they charge you! Makes you want to hunt 'em w/ an AK47! Javalenas are a southern US variety which are even uglier! Mount one in your room and it keeps out unwanted guests. If you ever get to the states there are preserves where you can hunt for a reasonable fee.

The release or re release of any species into a habitat will have a catostropic effect on the eco system. There would not be near enough suitable land to support a viable population of boar without running the risk of Joe public unwittingly getting him/herself maimed or worst by what is an naturally aggressive creature.
sure, i too would love if it were possible but i would'nt hold my breath:(
you can take a trip to Croatia for a 4 day Boar shoot (Food and board incl)
for a couple of grand. :D

For a real challenge try the New Zealand method with dogs and a knife.

The article mentioned teh fact that they're thought to be agressive but in reality they'll run a mile from people, just like most wild animals.

Is this the boar shoot you mean?

1400 euro for the four days.meals and booze and accomadation thrown in.It doesnt cover the cost of hiring a firearm though.I'd imagine in that part of the world rifles would be as common as ditch water but i cant understand why they dont put it in the price.

what ever the cost it might work out less of a headache than going through all that redtape which surrounds carring your own firearms. although i would'nt fancy heading into the forest with something i'm not familiar with.

I'll throw in me two cents on this one.I have hunted wild boar for quite along time in Germany. As such they are quite timid except in the mating season and when a sow has a farrow of young with her. They have been known to attack and chase walkers and tourists out of their patch of the forest.
As for terrain and adaptability,Berlin has a major problem in the suburbs with an indigineous pouplation of "schwarzkittel"[German hunting term for boar].They forage in gardens and rubbish bins and this is in a city of 8 million give or take. Not only that they have laid seige to a few suburban Berlin fammilies as well. So they would have no problem adapting to Irish life and terrain:)
Yes,there are a few up in around Boyle, they escaped or were released from a commerical Boar farm in the area.It was featured on ear to the ground a few years back.Somone photographed them, and thought they were cute:eek:
Anyone who thinks 200lbs of bristley tusked aggressive muddy critter is cute....Well whatever cranks your crank.
They can be hunted by either driven shoot, very fun and fast shooting, and you want to know where everyone is for saftey reasons, still hunting orby a pack of dogs with a boar spear and a VERY large knife. If you really want to test your courage that is.The dogs are generally terrier type, like German hunting terriers,or bull terriers.Small dogs can survive a boars charge better than a bigger animal for some reason, and the boar has a harder job against a dozen snapping terriers than large dogs.
Weapons, shotgun slugs or OO buck for close range, rifle ,NOTHING less than .308!!
Trophies, the tusks of the boar, the hide for your fireplace rug,and the meat for the BEST tasting, non drug treated, natural pork you can get.Barbecued it is delicious.

I did some pig shooting in Australia last November- fantastic hunting- trophies were 60 euro - non trophy 30, so not too bad - many places you can hunt for free especially in queensland.
I used a 30.06 which was a fantastic round if your used to it.

They estimate the population to be about 20 million and they are a real problem for farmers.

You seem to know alot about wild boar, would you have any idea where I might be able to purchase them here in Ireland ?
Thanks, as I await your reply.

    Markhor,
ASFIK there is only one farm that has them ,that is up where thoes lot escaped from.Dunno if they sell them or not,or are they still in busisness .Would suggest a call t o either the IFA for a list of farmers who might have them or AGtel productions in RTE who do the Ear to the ground seris and ask them to dig the name and address out of the farmer who had them.Only other place you might try is Cragganowen heritage centre in Co Clare. They have a couple for display to show what our ancestors hunted.

Hope you got some well enclosed large private property!!These are NOT in anyway like normal domestic swine.Plus if you keep them domestically[I use that term loosely] they ,and you will fall under the dept of Ag and EU regs regarding keeping of swine.Careful on this one,if they get out and create some havoc to property man or beast, you are going to be responsible for all damages.

That reminds me of this guy I met some years ago. He was a sniper in the 101st Abn. dand used to hunt bears with bow & arrow as a leisure activity....

A rather intense gentleman but also a very interesting character.

Thanks for the info regarding the boar etc., Did you have any luck getting the firearms certificate you mentioned last year.
    As regards myself I am still trying to get the 9.3x 62mm for shooting abroad;
I have made three applications already but I am up against a stone wall I think.

Nope!! No joy.Have left it into my lawyer to go and bother the super now. Will proably let it ride till next year and deal with it in the DC. Will be going back to the States in Autumn to re do my CWP,so that should take care of the experiance in a paticular firearm malarkey.
