I'm not sure if this is the right forum, please move if appropriate.

Now, on to the topic at hand:

How does one create a PDF document?

I've got a large project I'd like assemble and I think a nice PDF would be perfect, but I have no idea how to do this. Adobe Reader has a "Make pdf document online" option, but you've got to register with them for that.

See the Essential software Sticky . PDF creator. Sets it up as a printer all you have to do is select the PDF creator printer to the folder you want the pdf saved to and thats it. Primo PDF does it as well. Google Make PDF free for more

The new version of MS Office (2007) has saving as PDF built-in.

Not a pity at all. It'll help people become aware of cheaper(free) options to M$ Orifice.

OpenOffice has it built in. Other freeware options as well. PDFCreator lets you create pdf from any app.

Well known, and highly used software product missing a vital feature = Pity.

I repeat - not a pity at all. The fac that it's well known and highly used is a good reason to be glad that it's (free) competitors have an advantage.

Besides - based on their track record they'd just invent a new pdf "standard" that Acrobat Reader couldn't read.

[edit]And it's not a 'vital' feature - there are free apps that will do it for you. PDF Creator

CutePDF writer does the same job as PDF Creator too, a pdf printer. It's the one I always use.

It's the industry standard. It's as close to perfect as we have (and don't go on about openoffice etc. It's not the same, it's not as user friendly, it's more complicated, and it has fewer features), but it's missing a feature. So it's one more piece of software I have to install.

MS is developing/has developed an alternative to PDF. Them integrating PDF support basically meant that they weren't going to push their alternative, but instead now they will, meaning a divided market place as 90% of businesses use MSOffice. It would take a drastic mistake by MS to allow another package to gain a foothold, so it now means a divided marketplace, and one more piece of software to install = pity :)

huh? It's equally as friendly. No more complicated and has at least one extra feature (the one that the OP is looking for).

I've installed it for computer-illiterate people and they've barely noticed that it's not M$ office.

Am I right in thinking that the programmes listed above only allow you to do one page at a time rather multiples??

Zillah, I have pdf writer which allows multiple pages etc to be done in one hit. If you need anything doing then PM me and I am more than willing to help.

The whole reason that competition is good is because it makes people improve their products. The better OOo is, the more MS have to improve Office, the more Office improves, the more OOo will improve and so on. Stagnant products benefit no one.

You can make a PDF by printing to a printer driver that converts the output to a file.

for windows users - all allow multiple pages etc.
pdfcreator on sourceforge - the mutt's nuts (based on ghostscript)
www.pdf995.com Adware - but small and works
www.dial.de - huge download but when you install you get the driver

openoffice - as others have pointed out it's been offering save as PDF for years and it's free. when microsoft realease a version of office that can save as PDF you will probably find that people on earlier versions of office can't read files you send then because of the new XML format

most of the rest of the products are clones or have watermarks or trials etc

the most recent patch for Acrobat 7.07 is about 20MB (add the other 6 and it scary insecure bloatware )
foxit reader isn't as good a reader as adobe - but at 2MB it's soooo much smaller
