I have always been into photography and decided to spend some serious cash on a Canon EOS 20D and various bits & pieces.

However, I would like to take a course if anyone knows where that will help me take things a little further. So, what I am trying to say is, are there any digital photography courses available??

    Cheers

    Mike

Sorry, no advice on a course but if there's a camera club around there you're bound to run into people who can give you plenty of advice, and also make use of the club facilities if they have some.

    I just found this: http://galwaycameraclub.com/

You really should get in touch with them. You'll pick up tons just by going along to meetings and discussing their pictures, and also taking in yours for critique. It's something I really enjoyed when I was in Glasgow.

    Hi Mike,

I'm currently looking at running a weekend or one day Digital Camera Course in Galway. I would need a minimum of 4 to get that going. Do you know of others interested in taking such a course? What's the best outlet to advertise in Galway for this?

At the moment we have 2 Weekend Courses for Beginners & Improvers planned in Dublin.

If I get 4 or more interested in a particular part of the country I'd be happy to run this course almost anywhere.

The Dublin Beginners Weekend is on Sat 29/Sun 30 July and the Dublin Improvers Weekend is on Sat 26/Sun 27 August. Both courses run from 10am to 6pm each day and are held in our Studio in Park West, Dublin 12.

The course modules are listed on our web site which include a Photo Field Trip each day and critiquing of photos taken. Full colour illustrated handouts are provided for each topic (camera and computer) so you can practice long after the course has finished.

The weekend course fee is €195 which includes Lunch both days, full colour handouts and free computer software.

I would even travel to Dublin to do the course if it fits in timing wise. Shame about the July dates as I think I am abroad playing paintball. I will check & confirm tomorrow for sure as my diary is at the office.

With regards to the place to advertise courses. There are two newspapers for Galway. They are:

Galway Independent - FOC paper out every Wednesday
    Tel: (091)569 000
    http://www.galwayindependent.com/

Galway Advertiser - FOC Out every Thursday
    http://www.galwayadvertiser.ie/content/

    I hope this helps.

Just out of interest, what software do you provide as part of the course??

We use Picasa for the Beginners (I've written all the notes necessary which include screen grabs of the step by step instructions). It's surprising how creative you can be in it. It also makes it very easy to create photo websites.

PhotoPlus is the software for the Improvers. PhotoPlus works very much like Photoshop, certainly with regards to techniques (Photoshop is both way better though and also way more expensive). The techniques also migrate very easily to other image manipulation programmes such as Paintshop Pro.

Thanks for the newspaper info. I'll give them a shout in the morning. Any tips as to a good venue in Galway City?

My pleasure and not too sure as have just moved here myself. I'll do some digging around and see what people at work suggest. I am assuming you want a small(ish) room, what other requirements are there to consider??

Thanks for the help Mike. You're right about the room, small is beautiful. All we need is a screen (Irish Rail have a problem with me bringing mine), I bring the notes and the projector,

    cheers

    Dave

All we need is a screen

A white wall is good enough for that too if all else fails (been there, done that many a time) ;)
