Networking Mac and PC

A friend wants to buy a new computer - she's mostly using her computer for fun, but wants to have a laptop that she can also bring in to the office where she occasionally consults and network it.

She said "I don't know if I want a Mac or a PC, but I want to be able to network with the PCs in the office."

I had to tell her she'd be safer with a PC - my own experience of networking Macs and PCs is sheer horror.

When are they going to get it together and make networking the two platforms seamless and easy? I'd say a lot of people are deciding against Macs for the same reason.

"network" is a VERY broad term. What services does she need to use?

Most common stuff like internet and netowrk shares use standards independant of the operating system. IE the mac will be fine.

Its unlikely she will have issues, OS X can join windows AD\Domain networks, SAMBA and SMB (Windows) network shares etc without drama. Getting them to play nice is easy, in some cases easier than windows machines!

    http://www.macwindows.com/ is a handy resource.

Any incompatibilites are likely to be application specifc, rather than an OS X \ Windows issue.

look at the thread I posted about Appletalk in XP. You can network MacOS 7 - 9.2 with XP as well
