I'm thinking of buying an 8MP Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 digital camera . I know the photo quality is only as good as the printer resolution so what resolution would i need to do the pictures from this camera justice? I was thinking of the Canon Pixma MP780 with 4800x1200dpi or the Canon MP830 with 9600 x 2400 dpi print resolution. In practice would the resolution difference make a big difference to picture quality? There is anout €150 price differential between these two machines.

I think the printers are always ahead of the cameras so don't worry too much about it, the canon printers got great reviews.

    What about 2 years time...
And there's a difference between pixels and dpi

I have an EOS 350D and print on an Epson R200 and the quality is excellent even thought the printer cost only €99 no pixelation at all. That printer is the best A4 printer in Digital Camera World for as long as I have been buying it. I have had the epson for over 2 years now

    Any photo inkjet will do.
Assuming you a want to print in A4 (11*8 inches).
    8MP image resolution is 3.264 x 2.448 (say 3300*2400)
You need to write 300 pixels per inch.
Any of the printers you quote can use between 4 and 12 ink dots to represent that pixel (pixel = one dot on the screen).
So in theory, printing at 100%, the lowest of the printers will give you 4 times more details than you get on screen. The highest (9600dpi) will give you 32 times more details. Though that's only theory since the details don't exist in the original image.
In practice, you may (or may not) notice an increase in quality but it will be totally subjective.
I use an Epson 1270 (1440dpi) and haven't seen a printer that would make me want to upgrade on quality alone yet.
