Cleaning the reflex mirror on a dslr

My 350d's reflex mirror has been beseiged by dust and little hairs. This is after I lent it, my lenses and flash to a friend for a wedding. What risks are posed by cleaning it myself, and what solutions/materials should I use to do the job? Would it be more beneficial to have a camera shop do this work?

most camera shops seem to be completely clueless about cleaning dslr's. I would no sooner trust them with mine than I would attempt to juggle chainsaws after a night out in the pub.

Maybe someone like ISS would be able to clean it up for you... At the very least it's worth giving them a call.
