DVD Playback problem

    Hi,

Running Win2k pro, mat****a dvd-rw drive. Recently reinstalled everything but I seem to be having some sort of issues with my dvd drive. It worked perfectly before hand, so I know the physical drive isn't faulty...

When I play dvds, Its either:

Perfect picture with no sound, or choppy, slow picture with broken sound. I have tried a number of decoders including PureVideo (I have a Geforce 6400) and VLC and no difference. Its set to dma rather then pio mode, I have the latest firmware for the drive, and have tried different display and refresh rates for my card to no avail.

This might be related - when running music from a disc - not a music cd, but a game cd-rom install - the sound is hideous. For example I installed return to castle wolfenstein. The game installed at a normal speed but the background music which was running from the cd sounded like it was in super slow motion? This only affects cd-rom - running audio from the hard drive is perfect.

    any opinions welcome....

What sort of sound chip is being used ?

Anything in the event log flagged ?

Also you haven't installed one of those mega codec packs like K-Lite ?

What happens when you playback DVDs with Media Player Classic ?

RealTek audio - thats all I know about it. When I try play with MPC it says no suitable display codec found or something similar - even with all the various fereare and retail codecs I've installed.

I get an error when I insert a dvd in the drive of the following:

    DVD Player
While setting up DVD-Video playback, it was found that
    * Video cannot be shown on the computer monitor because of one of the following reasons:
    a) Low video memory. Please try using lower display resolution and/or colors.
    b) Another application is currently using the necessary display resources. Please ensure that no such application is running.
    c) The display adapter is incompatible with the DVD decoder. Please try to obtain a display driver update.
    Do you want to continue?
    Yes No

I don't have any codec packs installed, other the VLC player. Now, it DOES work on VLC player as I said, but either perfect without sound or hideous with sound. Won't open on WMP at all with the above message. Again as stated I tried PureVideo but that wouldn't work at all either. The only way I can get any sort of playback, broken or otherwise, is through VLC

I tried 5 DVDs - one of them worked perfectly on VLC, the rest were distorted and broken. None worked in WMP.

    Nothing logged.

I don't really watch DVD's on my laptop anyway but thats obviously not the point, would just annoy me to know its not working....

    thanks for the reply

First thing I would try is the latest audio drivers from Realtek which assuming it's not of the HD Audio variety can be found here.

    I assume you have Win2K SP4 & post updates installed, Direct X 9.0c etc.

I'm not totally sure on this but NVIDIA's own site doesn't say anything about Win2K support only WinXP & WinXP MCE it could be it simply doesn't work.

After updating the sound drivers try the trial version of PowerDVD 7 just to see what happens (and try VLC as well).

It is HD Audio. I will have a look around later on their site and see what I can find but I'm almost sure what I currently have IS the latest version.

I wonder, would the generic ac97 audio work? I'm not too clued in on audio solutions and I'm not too pushed about quality above a certain level i.e integrated basic audio would do me fine.

I have SP4 and Directx9.0c...will try see what other drivers I can find later and will also try powerdvd, thanks 8t8.

The HD audio drivers that are on the offical vaio support site for my model are corrupt, googling it shows others have the same problem, thats where I got the link to the current realtek drivers I have....

edit: they seem to have updated their drivers literally intthe last day. I will try the latest hd driver and see...
