Problem using the wrong cartridge with HP printer?

Since I was having problems with my HP 3822 I decided to fish out my old HP Deskjet 710C. It hadn't been used in the best part of 3 years, so was probably a bit dirty, and the cartridges may have been running low. I bought new cartridges for the 3822 a couple months ago so took the black ink cartridge out ant put it in the 710C. Initially it had problems printing frm the black cartridge, but after a few pages it gradually printed better and better until now it is printing perfectly.

The problem is that there was no number on the old cartridge, so I took it to be the same as they were the same size. I have since found out that the 710C using a no. 45 cartridge, while the cartridge I put in it is a no. 15.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea if continuing to use this wrong cartridge will cause problems down the line.

Shouldnt really, may as well get the most out of it as they are so damn pricey !, besides people do way more damage using the recycled cartridges that seem to be the in thing at the moment, at least yours is a genuine HP one.

To be honest, even if the recycled cartridges damage printers, they are still much cheaper than the legit cartridges. Buy a printer, keep using the cheap cartridges until the printer breaks down, then buy a new one and it will still be much cheaper than buying genuine ink.

i guess but , if u r thinking saving... a laser printer would be the way to go, much more life out of them and one could argue better quality too !

Perhaps, but at the moment I'm just thinking about getting what I need done right now with as little money spent as possible, for the time being it looks like I can live with what I have. I'm not too worried about damaging the printer since it is 10 years old. Just a shame the new one won't print straight.

51645 and 6615d were interchangeable on a fair few HP printers. It won't cause any damage to your printer. In general the only problems were with later Deskjets such as the 840c, which were designed for the 6615d and would reject the 51645, even though it fitted perfectly.

Ya the new printer prints slightly diagonally across the page, couldn't find a way to fix it.

u could try updating firmware, or ( depending on how new it is ) it could still be under warranty... u could give HP a ring....
