Right, so my brothers going to america for a few weeks, and i want him to bring back a few computer parts. I'm thinking i could get a GFX card, cpu, ram and possibly the mobo from america. Then buy the more bulky items like a case from komplett.

I already have enough HD space and a dvd burner so i don't need those, but i will need a new PSU.

What i'm looking at is the following:
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.2GHz Socket
    Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 DDR-DIMM 2048MB
    Asus A8R-MVP (i don't want SLI/Crossfire).
    Club3D GeForce 7900GT 256MB (maybe)?

What would be recommended cooler-wise? Are there cheaper chips that overclock well that would be better value for money? PSU wise, what would i be looking at, i'm thinking an Antec 480watt, or is there something else thats better/cheaper?

I think 4400 is spot on nice price/performance ratio..

as for PSU maybe he can pick one these for you?

Don't know about the cooler :/

tbh, why not wait? Core 2 Duo is just around the corner...

btw, check out G.Skill ram, they are said to be very good.

I could wait, but whats the point. I'd say the Duo processors will have limited availability for at least the first few weeks, and after that i won't have the option to get the parts from america. Which means i'll end up paying a fair bit more to get a Duo processor from europe.

How about getting a socket AM2? I doubt AMD are going to release much more CPUs on the socket 939 platform - have they even released the X2 5000?

There's a 60 dollar difference between 939 and AM2, and i'm not sure if it'd be worth spending the extra money. If i went with AM2, i'd have to get more expensive DDR2 ram aswell. The performance increase wouldn't be worth it.

Anyone know if this socket is going to be around for a while? How many gens will it be around?

939 will have no new chips released for it.

    But it's duo dude, DUO!!!

Anyways I agree with zilog, get AM2, 939 is going to be extinct soon, you might have to spend extra 100, but later, if you want to upgrade the cpu, with 939, you'll have to get all new mobo and ram. AM2 is more future proof.

I thought the prices of DDR2 have dropped alot in the past 4 or 5 months so that they nearly cost the same as DDR?

Yeah, DDR2 doesn't seem that much more expensive any more. Also, AM2 CPU's have dropped in price since their launch - the X2 3800+ has gone down €40 since it first appeared on Komplett anyway.

You'll be spot on with the antec 480w. I have one running Floppy, DVD, Raptor HDD, Normal HDD and two 7800GTs in SLi and not a bother on it.

Right, AM2 it is. Anyone care to recommend some good(ish) AM2 mobo's and decent enough ram? Muchly appreciated.
