Wireless - Internet Issue

I'm having a problem with my wireless connection to my broadband.
I have a desktop PC which is attached to a broadband modem. This pc shares out the internet to my laptop via wireless network. However, although the laptop connects to the pc via wireless, when I bring up internet explorer on my laptop, I can open ww.google.com (my homepage) and carry out all google searches successfully but will not open any of the links to the finds. I cannot open any other web pages either.

Does anyone know what is restricting it? I have lowered all security settings but no joy.

First of all Wireless forum is here.

What model of modem do you have?
How do you assign an ip address to laptop?
Can you ping any sites from the laptop?

Sorry, didnt know of a wireless forum, not sure how to move this thread now.

What model of modem do you have? I'm not at home now , so can;t tell but it's one from east bt

How do you assign an ip address to laptop?
The IP address is assigned automatically

Can you ping any sites from the laptop?
Not sure, will try when I get home.

ping's will give a better idea of the problem. Try pinging the router/modem. Then
82.195.136.250 (boards' ip address), then ping www.boards.ie.

If ping fails for first, then you're not getting a proper connection to the router/modem. If second one fails then you can't get a connection beyond the router. If last one fails (and all others pass) then it's a DNS issue.

    What i was thinking.

Try searching for something you never ever searched for...like "blahlshflkjsflj" or something. Does that load? If so your connected to the net. I dont' see why you wouldn't be able to open any of the links after that, unless of course theres DNS issues. Maybe you got google in ur DNS cache but can't make requests for DNS for other sites

I can ping successfully to any website using both IP address and name but will not open in internet explorer.
I've installed another web browser (Opera), but same issue.
www.google.com works and returns up-to-date search results. I've tried new web searches and it returns new results , so it's definitly connected.

    Very confused.

When you say laptop is connected to PC via wireless, do you mean just that? Or is laptop connected to the modem/router via wireless?

Also, if you connect laptop via cable to modem do you get the same problem?

I have a desktop pc that is connected to the broadband router. Within the desktop PC I have a wireless network card. I connect the laptop to the internet via the wireless network card on the desktop.

I will try connecting the laptop directly to the broadband router when I get homw tonight and see if I get the same result.

Ok makes more sense now. Try laptop direct to modem. That way if you have the same prob we know it'sto do with laptop and not the way it's networked to PC.
