Friend of mine recently purchased a dell 6400 laptop and is having sound problems with playing dvds - distortion etc. there is also a problem in reading some dvdrs.

Otherwise the sound is perfect itunes and cds play fine.

I have checked all the usual sound settings in case the volume was set to extra high somewhere.

    Anybody any suggestIons?

Have you tried different players... ie; Media player, Real Player etc..?

Is it via the onboard speakers &/or have you tried it with external speakers? Maybe the problem lies in the discs you are using, are they original copies..?

We tried media player - real player would not play dvds for us - tried it with headphones and the dvds were originals.

Have you tried updating the sound cards drivers or checking it's properties panel to make sure it is correctly configured ?

Dell machines come with a crap load of crap installed on them. Silly programs like sonic dvd burning software that are next to useless (and a pain in the ar8e to remove).
Maybe before you play a DVD open the taskmanager and kill all processes related to this heap of junk. It may be conflicting with drive drivers.
Also try vlc for playing the dvds - its an excellent video prog that will play almost anything!
Another problem is if your friend installed any games with the starforce protection system (i think ubisoft in particular are fond of it) goodle it and you'll find a list if games that use it. Basically starforce is software that tries to prevent game piracy by only allowing the origional game disk to launch the game. Its known to ruin optical drives.

I's definately a good idea to get rid of the poor Dell software from the machine tho.
Tell your friend to invest in nero for dvd/cd burning and he won't look back
