Bord Pleanala to allow land purchase for Kerry bypass

An Bord Pleanala has decided that the purchase of land for a bypass around Castleisland on the main Kerry to Dublin route is to go ahead.

The 5.4 km of new, single-carriage road will connect the improved N21 from Abbeyfeale in Co. Limerick and the N21 from Tralee with the N23 from Kerry airport and Killarney.
Around 85 acres are being bought by the county council from 24 landowners. Work is expected to begin later in 2006.
The route west of Castleisland will involve a bridge over the river Maine and two roundabouts. The NRA has approved the scheme.

Councillors now believe that a ring road around Tralee, Co. Kerry, will not be completed. Reacting to these claims, county engineer Tom Curran has said that smaller road schemes away from the big Dublin routes were falling by the wayside. This was because most resources were targeted as the most expensive projects.
