Question: When does the afternoon become the evening or is the evening also the afternoon as it is also after noon. i.e. Does the afternoon ever end since even the evening is after noon. The reason I asked is because I was just told that I had a meeting this evening. I nearly sh!t because I want home to watch the World Cup. Turns out the intended meeting is at 2:45pm. That's not the evening, surely. ... ?

Evening for me would start about 4/5pm. Anything later and it's nearly getting into night. Then, I think what time of year it is has a large bearing on this.

    Afternoon - After 12 (Midday)
    Evening - After 6
    Night - After 9
    Morning - After 12 (Midnight)

Just my opinion, not based on any facts I've gathered from anywhere.

During the bleakest part of Winter, I would generally start saying good evening after about 4.
It's a perception thing really, innit?

So if you bump into a mate in a club at 1 am, or whatever, do you greet them with a "good morning"?

It's a tricky business this afternoon/evening thingy. I'll bet it's been the downfall of many aspiring businessmen.

nope.... it's usually "You're me bestest buddy in the whole wide world you are."

The whole after midnight thing... it's still ok to say "good night", as it's interpreted as "have a good nights sleep", and not relating to the time per se.

I'd probably start evening from after 5pm and not 6pm though.
