Thinking of getting a Vespa

    Hi,

I was thinking of getting a Vespa this summer for college next term. I have a couple of questions and would appreciate some help.

I have a provisional licencefor class B. I've never sat the driving theory test. Will I need to sit this?

Also, do I need class A1 or W.

I've no experience with mopeds and need it to get to work/college 5 days a week.

Any recommendations on what I should be looking out for? Spec, cost, etc.

    Thanks..

This link will give you all the information about the different types of licences.

I take it the Vespa is a 50cc? If so an 'M' license is sufficient. If it's more, but under 125cc, you will have to get an 'M1' license although at this stage you're better off just getting an 'A' license...

As for the theory test, I'm pretty sure you are going to have to sit it. I am sitting it myself on Friday to get an 'A' license :o

Also, do I need class A1 or W. W is for JCB, so that's fairly irrelevant. Unless you're buying a bike less than 50cc, get an A1

I've no experience with mopeds and need it to get to work/college 5 days a week. I'm presuming we're looking at 'traditional' Vespa's here? With gears? If so, it'll be fine. If you're looking at modern 50cc auto stuff, then they're fine too, but technically you only need an M licence if you have no intention of changing to something bigger/better (unlikely imho...)

Any recommendations on what I should be looking out for? Spec, cost, etc. mmm, how mechanically minded are you? Trad Vespa's need a bit of tlc, but are sound reliable bikes. Being made of metal, they don't fall apart from the odd thump, either.........

If on the other hand, you're not hung up on Vespa's, there's a world of choice, and insurance being as expensive as it is, secondhand bikes can be had for very sensible money, market is slow at the moment.... Me? I've had a PX125 since.......forever.......OK, 1991, and you can't kill it. Drive it sympathetically and it gives no trouble. I'm still on original cruciform and gear cables and it's a peach. Mechanically, that is. Cosmetically, ooooh, that's a different story..........judge for yourself...!!

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
