hard disk problem

    Hi folks

I have installed a second hard disk to my system just now. I have it installed correctly, jumpered correctly and connected to the slave position on the IDE cable. I started up again and it is showing up as normal in the BIOS and in the windows device manager.

Problem is it is not showing up in my computer. I assume it is because I did not format it out of the box. How do I now format it?

Any help in sorting it out would be appreciated.

    Kind regards
    007

Yeh windows does that alright, go into system then device manager.

See if it's in the list, if it is, right click and disconnect it then reconnect. If it's not there click the top of the hardware tree and 'scan for new hardware'.

It's happened to me a few times and this usually solves it.

I'd recommend making more than one partition on your new disk if it's very big (e.g. over 100GB), as it will be easier to manage/order things and it will be easier to defragment, e.g. you could put files that don't change much (e.g. music and videos) in one partition, and stuff that does fragment a lot (e.g. files/doc's you work on a lot, or games) in another.
