I have the old version of this and it has served me well for the past year. I will be getting this new one for one main reason: the USB port. It will be so much handier to just plug a 1 gb usb stick into it than to re-burn a CDRW every time I want to change my music. Also, its available in black, which will match my dash far better than the old silver one :)

Does anyone know if this has an Aux-In, I can see it doesn't have the 3.5mm one on the front, but does it have RCA Aux-In on the back?

I think the description says Black/Silver i.e. the surround is black but the unit is still silver. Have a look at the current flyer.

****e. Don't have the flyer handy.

Just looked at the tiny picture of the black/silver one on the aldi site, looks like its mostly black with a bit of silver trim... not so bad I guess.

I'm looking at the flyer now and I reckon its mostly silver with a black surround. You can always look at it in the shop before you buy :)

Sthphen, does the old one have RCA Aux In on the back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I'm not sure exactly what RCA is, but there was these two cables, one red and one white that might be it? Whatever they were, they didn't connect to anything in my car - it just used the ISO connectors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭padraigmyers

Yup, thats them, its just that they could be output (for external amp) or inputs (for connecting up an MP3 player or something). Its the outputs I need, I don't suppose you know of any links to a spec or manual for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

They are outputs afaik. I vaguely remember the flyer about the old one mentioning two types of output. There's no aux input or anything that you can select when using the radio anyways - it just lets you switch between CD/MP3 and radio. There's very little information available on the web about these, at least as far as my googling tells me.

So, has anybody picked up today's one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭padraigmyers

Ya, just to confirm, one of the guys at work got one, and they are outputs all right. Must say, its a pretty nice system at a really good price. Unfortunatly, not what I need though.

Can anybody confirm if I put a 2gb memory stick into the USB port will it play the music on it?

Is so if the music on the memory stick is organised into a directory structure will it be able to handle this. It would be great not having to go through hundreds of songs one by one to find what you're looking for.

And finally will track titles of appear on the display?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

If it behaves with USB storage like it does with MP3 CD's, then yes, proper directory structures will work, and titles will be displayed if the mp3s have ID3 tags.

Would this be hard to install DIY?

Here's a few pics of the black one I bought this morning

I wonder if they have any left?

I picked up one yesterday evening, seem to be still available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭fishfoodie

    Kazzer,

I bought one of these yesterday & they look nice & easy to install if you've a standard DIN stereo already, otherwise you'll need to get a facia adaptor for you model car to make it work.

The only tips I'd pass along are to make sure you've got the code & manual for your old stereo before you start, you may need these if you want to replace the old stereo after youve removed it & to remove the fuse for the stereo before starting the install. Its overkill, but I've heard of a few occasions where people have cooked systems in cars while wiring in Amps
    :(

just picked one up this morning, simple to install, i fitted it in the car park outside after i bought it in about 5 mins. Id previously removed my old stereo to wire up extra speakers so i was pretty comfortable with doing that.
Nice little unit, gotta love the sd/mmc slot and the usb port, havent tried out any mp3's in it yet, just standard cd since thats all i had in the car, will try stick a usb drive into it this evening and see what happens.

sound quality is just as good as the old clarion head-unit i had, the main reason i replaced it was for mp3 and also the old one didnt like even slightly scratched cd's very much.

Did you have all the music in the one folder or had you them categorized into different folders?

I have mine in a load of different folders and its working fine.

Just ordered one of these to put into it: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=100916
^ that's a brilliant price, and includes VAT.

    thats a hell of a price? 26.99? for 2gb?

just ordered on, £31 incl p&p, thats pretty darn good

Delivery will be a bit slow, mind. I ordered a 1GB USB stick (for £14 :D) off them before, it took about 10 days to arrive.

It only takes about 4 days within the UK, to be fair, £4 delivery is cheap.... I'd prefere to pay less and wait. I got a 1 Gig Mini SD for £19 from them....

    Great!

    Hi guys,

Are these still for sale, and if so in which Aldi's?

The one on Parnell St didn't seem to have them.

    Thanks,

    Anyone???

Aldi have no phone numbers on their website, and I don't fancy driving out to one of their stores to discover they sold out ages ago.

    Thanks.

was sold out on saturday when I was in the Thurles Aldi. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭blobert

Anyone else know if these are still available?

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

I doubt it, they normally sell out within the day, even if they had some left, the latest offers will be in and replacing the old ones.

Anyone else think the display isn't great during the day? Like all the little symbols and stuff are impossible to see. Track number and position in track are fine but everything else is a bit krap.

Apart from that its deadly. Beats the ****e out of my casette player!!:D

Its hard to read in bright light alright. Looks quite nice in the dark though.

will an ipod work with this unit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,776 ✭✭✭podge3

I saw on of these CD/radios in Thurles Aldi this morning - probably a customer return as the box looked like it had been opened.

Sorry to bring this up again. My husband bought one and he has problems getting radio stations tuned in. Could anyone please tell me is this normal or how to rectify it. Thanks.

there is a very similar one in Maplin - it sells for around 100 (every
second month it seems) in their 'sale'. Its a "Shark" branded.
Looks quite smart - big display, but Id say by the same factory. This one does have an Aux in and Out - via four red
and white phono plugs. It also takes usb and sd cards (plays mp3 and wma).

What seems to be the problem? Stations won't stay in memory? Can't find where the save tuning button is etc? Elaborate.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 291 ✭✭pokerwidow

No, the stations cannot be tuned in. When he tries to tune in say Today fm, it is just not picking up a signal. I think he has got RTE radio 1 and that is saved. The others just cannot be picked up.

    Thanks for replying Munster. :)

Might sound like a silly question but has he popped the unit back out and is sure the aerial jack is secure in the back of it? if so is the aerial wire of the car damaged, as in when you pull on it it doesnt come away from the center console in your hand or anything like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭fishfoodie

I Attach the face-plate & tune in the stations & save them as pre-sets, then remove the faceplate OR just power it off & all the pre-sets disappear. I noticed that the clock looses the correct time as well

Its a pain in the arse, but its not enough to return the stereo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 203 ✭✭bacon&cabbage

    Fish,
it sounds like you don't have constant current going to the memory connection of the radio, the voltage (12V or 5V ?) keeps the preset stations in memory, if there isn't a constant current to this pin the stations will be lost everytime you turn off the radio.
You will have to test this with a multimeter, the manual will show you which pin it is on the ISO connector
Other than that the pin may be in the wrong location on the ISO plug
Did the stations hold in your previous radio ?

That's a common problem with aftermarket stereos, its just a case of swapping two wires in the ISO connector.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 291 ✭✭pokerwidow

Thanks all for your replies. I will show him this and let him figure it out.

    Thanks again :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 203 ✭✭bacon&cabbage

Just had a look again The constant live is the yellow wire (see Pg 6 on the manual) :)

Anyone having problems playing music from SD cards with this? It works perfectly with USB and MP3 CD's, but just will not read SD for me :(
I've tried the 256MB SD card from my digital camera, which has worked perfectly for the last year, and a new 2GB SD card. When I put them in, the display just reads MEM-CARD but will not play anything unless I switch to tuner or CD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

got a 2gb sd card and it works perfectly fine although the manual does say there is a 1gb limit on usb/sd devices i think, but it reads all the tracks grand

i tried a usb memory key and it didnt work though, although that might have just been a problem with that key

have you formatted the sd card at all? the unit only takes fat/fat32 formatted cards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Yeah, I've formatted both cards. They both read fine in my usb card reader. It plays from USB and CD perfectly.

Did you create any particular directory structure on the SD card? Is there a limit on no. of files or filename length etc?
