only managed to get my new pioneer head unit (which cost 350 euros) before the security picked them up on cctv and chased them out of the complex (royal canal park)
luckily they didnt get anything else from the car.

cant understand the mentality these ***** have..

Dont take this the wrong way but it could have been worse - check out the rec.motor forum - some guy had his car keyed down both sides (full length) and on the bonnet too. That one was pure nasty.

does the radio not have a detachable facia?

My radio is worth the same, and the facia come off.

I’m not trying to be a smart arse but if you are going to put lots on money into your car would you not get a decent alarm system first?

I don't think it makes any difference. My brother's car got broken in to in Great Western Square and they stole his stereo (cheapo Blaupunkt CD player in a Fiat Punto) even though he had the front facia in the house. The damage to the car was more than the CD player was worth, they smashed the side window but only after they fcuked up the lock trying to force it open with a screwdriver.

My brother had an alarm too, but it wasn't turned on

An alarm is only a mild deterant anyway. If they want your car/stereo, then they're going to take it regardless of the alarm. If it's a crime of opertunity then an alarm may just make them move on to the next car that doesn't have one.

Will your insurance cover the stereo at all? A lot of policies state manufacturers standard accessories so if you change the radio it might not be covered under a comp policy.

it did, i had it in the glove box though, stupid i know but i didnt expect them to even get past security, there is one enterence with a gate that has to be manually opened by a security and theres about 30 cameras in the place too, i usually park underground but didnt last nite as my flatmate was in my space

they must have seen me in the car before or scoped it out before as they broke in even though the face was off

if the face wasnt in the glove id say they wud have went for the amp etc

and the alarm probs wudnt have made a difference, 2 minutes and they were in and out and the security had picked them up on the cctv. :(

Muppets! They should get shot right there and then

It is one thing to be poor and another to destroy and steal and harm others people property. No excuse - just lock them all up:mad:

Meh, somebody broke into my work van 2 weeks ago and stole my gearstick. Now that was an annoying and pointless crime.

My Head unit is a Pioneer (about 8 years old) and if you detatch it or cut the power it requires a key code through a special remote control? Surely all new stereos use this by now?

I would have thought that all new systems would encorporate this feature making theft of this manner a thing of the past.

my car was broken into in Edinburgh a few years back. They did loads of damage to the door and guess what they got.....a coat. They robbed my bloody coat.

To the OP, I remember when Royal Canal Park was being built I was thinking that they were gonna have to put in some serious security in there because of the area. where scumbags are concerned, where theres a will theres a way. Not much seems to deter them.

they do, security on each gate that is manually lifted and lowered to allow people past, cameras everywhere..
the 3 theifs came in across the canal apparently and we have them on cctv, going to watch the video later i think
nothin they can do tho when it comes to things like that!

It sounds like they are building a car bit by bit here.

(sorry I know its not funny - my car has had its ford badge yanked off and the electric colour coded wing mirrors mangled more times than I can remember)

My dads mini was stolen years ago. After driving it about for a bit they stole his pipe. Cultured thieves obviously.

Pulp Fiction has a fitting quote:
    Lance: Still got your Malibu?
Vincent: Aw, man. You know what some f**ker did the other day?
    Lance: What?
    Vincent: F**king keyed it.
Lance: Oh, man, that's f**ked up.
Vincent: Tell me about it. I had it in storage for three years, it was out for five days and some dickless piece of sh*t ****ed with it.
Lance: They should be f**king killed. No trial, no jury, straight to execution.
Vincent: Boy, I wish I could've caught him doing it. I'd have given anything to catch that asshole doing it. It'd been worth him doing it just so I could've caught him doing it.
    Lance: What a f**ker!
    Vincent: What's more chickensh*t than f**king with a man's automobile? I mean, don't f**k with another man's vehicle.
    Lance: You don't do it.
Vincent: It's just against the rules.

My car was recently smashed into, when I foolishly parked on the wrong side of the Liffey in order to watch a movie on Parnell St :) what did they get, I hear you ask? Almost €10 worth of equipment, specifically a cable/cassette to link my iPod with the cassette deck. Score 1 for the scumbags.

But of course, its society's fault for not providing a stimulating post-school living environment for the poor dears, if only I'd been there, I'd solve all the problems with a nice warm hug...*

*Hug may involve use of baseball bat / machete. Post-hug happy ending not guaranteed

Snap. Me and my gf parked up in the lane behind the UGC cinema on Parnell street last week. My bluetooth headset was charging and that must have been what caught the eye, but they sniffily turned up their noses at taking it - presumably wasn't a good enough model.

Nothing was taken, but the passenger window was smashed. The Garda came and beat the rest of the window out with his truncheon(!) He said that all the scaldy heads were in town for the Robbie William's concert and that the Store St. cells were packed.

Guess we'll have to park in the multi-storey from now on, €5 a time to park while watching a movie...sigh

You can't have missed what the little sputum brained f***ers do to bikes around the city! If they can't steal it they destroy it.

Yep, same location. Defo the wrong place to park when you're heading to the movies! They didn't bother taking a torch worth €15, but took a cassette cable worth €10, which is only useful if you own both a car with a cassette player and a portable music device!

I went to college in Bolton St and I must say that Kings Inn St along with that lane (Loftus Lane IIRC) are really really bad areas for cars being broken into. In the evenings, coming out of college, it wouldnt be unusual to see a car or two with their windows smashed in, or broken glass, where there was a car. Once, in a lecture, the whole class witnessed one of these scumbags smashing in the window of a car and garbbing whatever was on the passenger seat.
