That is bad. I saw bohsman commented that it was pretty well known. Known by the staff/Fitz staff or by a reasonable amount of the poker public?

Wow that is terrible. No wonder I never hear many good things about there. You wouldn't see that happening on the CPT in fairness to them

Thats it, I am cancelling my membership (not that I have ever been there  )

I think it only fair that the great poker players of the Merrion Casino club should be aware that none of the tips given to the dealers is received by the dealers. Instead its used by the company to pay wages of all gaming staff including that of the managers.
So the next time you win a tourny or big pot, dont give any tips as the money does not go to whom you intended.
    Long live the fitz!

I don't get a chance to play live very often, so this tipping the dealers is new to me.

How much would people generally tip the dealers and how?
Thats pretty rough that the Merrion aren't playing fair.

3-5% on a tournament win/2nd possibly 3rd left with the TD, 1euro plus on a cash game hand depending on the size of the pot.

Ive known since before I started working in the Fitz, the last time I won a tourney in there 900 or so I left a nominal 20euro.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 834 ✭✭✭peeko

    cheers.

why did you even leave the 20 if the company are just going to steal this money to pay their staff? I would of left nothing.

Do you tip the dealers themselves? Or do you give the tip to who-ever pays you your winnings? And leave it up to them to distribute. How are things done in the Fitz?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,881 ✭✭✭bohsman

Just leave it with whoever pays you your winnings. At that stage the tips went to the Tournament Director afaik

i won the tuesday comp and took 1300 off which i left 100 as a tip for the dealers. god damn it stung again. ill be in there 2 moro and will have a word with bernard in relation to this as i find this situation totaly unacceptable. will report back what is said as it is under new managment and that situation will change as soon as bernard finds out so please guys cut a little slack till i find out more.

The person who posted that (and I have done my usual Dectective DeV on it and know quite a bit about him now) was let go from the Merrion the night before that was posted. Bernard (who replaced Mags in charge of poker after she moved on) rang me to confirm that the dealers are paid their tips at the end of every month and the management do not use them to pay staff wages.

I dont like being used as a platform for revenge or libel.

hi all just back from the merrion where i got busted out early with kings after my opponent hits his set of snowmen. 4 hands previous i let JJ go with a AQ6 flop wait for it yes folks a jack on the river. ohh well i have to say it is one off the best value tournys in town.100 double chance deepstack 4k starting 4k anytime after 1st hand. i also talked to a few dealers(gaming and poker) and have been assured there tips are an extra and not part off there wages. bernard is the new pit boss in the merrion and is one off the best in the business and i personally think the merrions poker crowd is going to pick up very quick with good payout and tournaments strutures in place for the tournament players they cant go wrong. hehe more fish for me to fry.
on a more serious note bernard i wish you all the best in the merrion.good job mate keep it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭pppspecial

i am certain off this as i have myself now confirmed it with bernard where the tips go. so as a regular at the merrion i shall continue to leave tips when i feel the need.

student/trainee staff don't get the same tips as the full time staff.
full time staff will get a percentage of whats won on the gaming floor etc.
    trainees don't

however, trainee dealers are paid 100% from the poker tips. sometimes we'd get over €12/h, somes times we'd get €10/h. it all came from the tips from the tournament and the tips from the cash game.

the funny thing was, for the irish open, because the full time staff have their own "system", it worked out that they got less than the trainees in tips!
For working that weekend i got about €20/h between wages and tips!

i was only a trainee dearler there for a while but that's what i understood the case to be. i don't work there anymore and i don't really play there anyway so i have no love for the place but fair is fair like.

    Don't stop tipping!

Just a quick question to dev who seems to be on fantastic terms with bernard. Are you his long time friend, a regular customer? Im wondering because you'll find it quite hard to find anyone who has worked under him to back you up on what a wonderful character he is.

Recently quitting the emporium because of how terrible the upper managment were, i was fortunate enough to be offered my job back in the merrion where i originally worked, under some of the best managment around, namely duke and mags. Unfortunatly, seeing as mags went onto bigger and better things, and duke also, heading the jackpot (who also coincidentally went to the emporium and quit for upper managment reasons), after all this, it was just one or two of the original people i used to work with.

And very unfortunatly, Bernard (one of the managment who gave me great reason to quit the emporium) came over to head up the merrion.

I recently had a family problem which caused me to be late to work in the merrion, but without questioning, Bernard, who i might add has been openly abusive across the entire poker floor for all the customers to hear since he started working there, told me to put my jacket back on and go back out, before i opened my mouth. Not wanting to explode at him as we were on the poker floor i simply got my jacket and walked. He however had no qualms, as per usual, about loudly exclaiming "you must be ****ing joking" and a bit more loud cussing so all the customers could hear.

Someone said about a week ago that you have to take that from people who are above you in work. That was the last (but not first) i would take, be it my boss or anyone else, shouting abuse at me across an entire floor full of punters. It makes no difference to me if he's my boss. I wont be treated like ****.

Now i decided to quit when i went in to pick up my paycheck, but found when i came back that he had slyly cleared me from the roster and told everyone behind my back i was fired without speaking to me.

Another great example of why this person got dropped by his previous partner years ago when he could have been joint head of another very famous casino in dublin, and just one of the many reasons i have to back up what i originally said, that anyone working alongside or under him wont jump on your "Bernards great " bandwagon.

Bernard will never gain ANY of his workers respect until he stops treating them like ****. You don't judge people by how they treat their punters. They HAVE to treat them well. You judge them by how they also treat their staff, which puts Bernard s**t out of luck.

As an aside, the person who posted the comment about the dealers not recieving any tips, was fired the day before, with a pregnant wife and looking for a place to live, which Bernard knew about.
And what you said about having heard about this person Dev, i was living and working with him. I didn't just get Bernards side of that story.

I had heard this a couple of years ago but anytime I was in a game I found it tough to not tip the standard one or two. Bit sheepish I know but the old "when in Rome" mentality took over. Some players can get frosty, even aggro with a non tipper - even there.
Management in any cardroom should not do this imo.
Glad to see Merrion is (now) a safe to tip zone

I havent set foot in the Merrion to play in over 18 months bar the odd EPT style event. I dont like it, the way its run or a number of the former management there. So claiming I'm biased is simply crap.

I find it amusing that you want me to stand over your nasty jibes and defamation when you arent willing to identify yourself publically. From that point on, anything you say is like this in my ear: "blah blah blah blah whinge blah blah and then he hit a 4 on the river."

I think in fairness to Devore, he investigated the previous claim and reported his findings on Boards. He does not have to justify anything to you cillerxx and I feel that if you feel you were badly treated then take it up with the owners of the Merrion. I am also a suspicous cow and find the timing of your post is pretty sh*tty, considering Devore is half way across the world reporting on the biggest poker tournament ever (and doing a bloody brillant job aswell) living on oh 5 hours sleep, caffeine tabs, nicotene, adrenelin and the best food group ever burgers'n'beer. I think if you are looking for an apology or some TLC the Merrion is the place to go.

Saying that you disliked former managment simply concretes my earlier assumptions that you are on the same frame of mind as Bernard. Seeing as the "former managment" were the best there were around. You would only be treated nearly as well anywhere else in the fitz by their managment. Duke, Mags, and Mark were absoloutly fantastic, and i now get why you disliked them. Anyone who likes Bernard is bound to dislike actual sound people.

I still like the Merrion and don't wish anything bad for them. I think its run well, and the atmosphere is probably the friendliest around. Most of the players go there for fun, as opposed to the emporium or fitz, where profit dominates everyones mind. I agree with absoloutly none of your statements so far, but if you happen to stumble on a correct statement ill let you know. Good luck on your "biggest tournament ever" assignment. Im sure the article will be fantastic.

Don't call yourself names, and if you think i know or care where deV is on the planet your mistaken. Licking up to people generally isnt the way to earn respect by the way. And if i was as insecure as to want an apology, i'd shoot myself.:D

Just so i am not put in the same boat as the seemingly quite bitter Cillerexx (sic?), let me explain and clarify my previous post in this thread.

I'll start by saying that this was before Bernard's time, and he seems like a fine person, as was everyone i worked with at the time.

The specific incident that encouraged me to leave was one particular event. It was tournament put on for the celebration of a popular poker player's birthday.

Someone had put up the prize fund for the tournie. But it was still a rebuy tournament, because this person wanted to give something back to the dealers. The idea was that all rebuys would go to the dealers. Which was really nice.

The place was packed and everyone got into the rebuy frenzy. It was €20 rebuys and people went crazy rebuying. I think Alan Betson (short, funny guy) rebought about 10 times! Must have been at least €3-5,000 in prize pool. Everytime someone rebought they said to us dealers, "well, at least you lot are going to be the winners tonight", as they had been told that the money was going to us.

Then, the next week we came in for the tips and we got maybe €40-€50 each. This was so vastly underneath what we were expecting that we asked about it and were told unofficially that most of the money was added to the general dealers pool (casino dealers, not poker dealers).

I know that this wasn't the intention of the poker players, most of whom would never go near the casino floor, and that is what left a bad taste in the mouth.

TBH the money wasn't really the main thing. It was a really pleasant night. Possibly the best night i've spent in a casino without actually gambling money, because there was such a friendly atmosphere. I would have gladly volunteered to deal it for free, if asked.

It was just the impression that we hadn't been treated fairly according to how the players felt we were going to be treated.

    LMAO

I was trained by Luke and worked with both Bernard and Luke in the Merrion before the Fitz opened. Mags also learnt to deal the same time but didnt do much dealing as she was too scared to deal to the Hierachy in there at the time. She took over when Myself and Luke went to the Fitz but didnt have much experience though and had to resort to taking players out onto the street to ask them about rulings. Bernard has never been dropped (as you put it) from anywhere. Im still very good friends with both Bernard and Luke so yes, I can safely say thati have evidence to back up everything i have put.

I suggest YOU do your homework before you come on here and start stating things that arent true.
