I've had two seperate problems of late and both seem to have resulted in the same issue; drivers.

This thread details my problems with my audio drivers, and this one details my problem with iPod/USB port drivers...
Both my USB and Audio ports are onboard, my mobo is an MSI MS6701, OS WinXp SP2... I can't seem to get the updates I need for each part though; windows update is of no help and I've reinstalled the default drivers from the PC to no avail... any ideas on what to do next? Hopefully not an OS reinstall...

well you need to go to the msi website for the latest drivers for them, they will cover motherboard drivers sound and usb drivers. not all in one, they will most likely be in different sections. so good hunting :)

Yeah, slight problem I've encountered there, namely finding the product on their site :s
    Will keep looking though

That motherboard was made for OEM use. In this case for Medion computers. So maybe look on their site for info.

    http://www.medionusa.com/

Go to customer care an enter your serial number, should give you a list of drivers.

The MSI 6701 uses a SiS chipset or sayeth Google.

    Just go to http://www.sis.com/download/

And select from the list the SiS 7012 Audio Device & anything else pertaining to the SiS 648 chipset like the AGP driver.

Touch wood I seem to be getting somewhere with the USB drivers, but not the audio ones... when I downloaded that audio device and started to install it, it stopped and gave me a dialogue box saying "-536870397"; which I still can't find explanation for... thanks for everyone's help so far, I seem to be getting somewhere anyway (trying to avoid a OS reinstall!!!)

edit: found a guy with the same issue here, going through the process detailed now to see if it will solve my problems.

Just my luck; start a disk defrag and am updating my ipod happily and then the power goes on my road.... ffs.

back to square 1 with the USB (It happens where it recognises it once when formatted, but not any time after that), cracking on with the audio update...

    Gotten nowhere, sadly.
The process I linked did nothing for me, and nor did the USB drivers I got from SiS... looks like it's either live with it or an OS reinstall.

WinXP suxx0rz.... my computer must have noticed the amount of times I've been checking out iMacs online... :D

What exactly is wrong with the USB drivers as you shouldn't have to be installing any USB controller drivers on a WinXP SP2 box

Well they don't recognise my iPod, and from what I can see that's the only explanation (it worked on my laptop before that broke, it's my second iPod, both had the same issue).
I've had no other issues with them, not even for an external HDD (laptop drive in caddy)... but when I plug the iPod in I'm told I need to format it, if I do that it works once and then goes back to needing to be formatted again... if I try to open it as a HDD it says it can't due to an I/O error and sometimes the iPod updater software, which I use to format it, doesn't even recognise it...

Okay you could try a few things to get the iPod working, you may also want to remove or undo anything that you installed to do with the USB like the SiS USB drivers etc. Some of the below may require a working connection so you might want to try it on another PC the last one (5) sounds promising.

    1) Reset the iPod
    2) Update firmware of iPod
    3) iPod not recognised when plugged into laptop USB
    4) Check to make sure iPod service is running properly
    5) iPod formatting problems how to reset for Windows or Mac

thanks for those; no 4 worked well (once) but having the same problem again, going to try the quick fix to see what happens... although I did manage to get everything onto my ipod again so I won't be too keen on formatting it... again

Why not just try the MSI Update Utility?, or does it not recognise your motherboard ?
