It's just been pointed out to me what the lyrics of, I'm on fire by Bruce Springsteen are.

"Hey little girl is your daddy home did he go away and leave you all alone.. Tell me now baby is he good to you? Can he do to you the things that I do? ".

This is rather disturbing stuff yet I seem to hear it on the radio all the time. Any thoughts on this?

I think its supposed to be sang by a 17 year old to his similair-aged girlfriend ? could be wrong tho.

If he does a duet with gary glitter or michael jackson we will know for sure.

Yes, all shít songs should be banned.

Regarding the "little girl" (etc)... I think they were written in more innocent times and you just need to chill out.

No, but "Baby Hit Me One More Time", about teenage spouse abuse, should def be banned.

I think the meaning is just taken up wrong, I can see you could read into it his way tho. HMmmmmmmm
nope I dont think it should be banned as Nirvana had a hit with "Polly" which is all about rape if I remember correctly but just because they didnt clearly say it in the song they got away with it.

I always thought he meant the word daddy as the father of the girls child.

    Oh my.

Someone has waaaaay too much time on their hands tbh.

"Little girl" is a term of endearment, like "baby" or "honey"
    and
    "daddy" means her significant other.

If you listened to the rest of the lyrics and saw the video to the song you'd see that its not at all about paedophilia.

All songs have hidden meanings in them. Therefore if this song on the surface appears to be about child abuse then we can breath easy that its hidden meaning is about nothing of the sort. In fact "I'm on fire" may be the the only song ever written that is NOT about child abuse.

No it should not be banned. Purely because it was released in 1984. And 1984 is the coolest year ever.

    GOOD GOD SOMETIMES!!!
Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go away and leave you all alone
    I got a bad desire
    I'm on fire

Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things that I do
    I can take you higher

Inotherwords, as much as you love your daddy, he specifically can't do anything exciting and sexual with you, which I can, as your 17 year old boyfriend, so whoop de doo let's get messy.

    /me bangs head off wall.

Or take this verse from "Hallelujah", which is often used to play over montage scenes in teen dramas like "The O.C." :
well there was a time when you let me know
    what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

    That's just dirty.

How about Queens of the Stone Age, Little Sister

Hey sister why you all alone?
    I'm standing out your window
Hey little sister, can I come inside, dear?

I wanna show you all my love
I wanna be the only one
I know you like nobody ever, baby

Its nothing to write home about,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 282 ✭✭matu

I think little sister in that song tho is meant in the same way some people us young one to mean woman
it just wouldnt sound the same if someone from Ireland wrote that song

Hey young one why you all alone?
    I'm standing out your window
Hey young one, can I come inside, dear?

I wanna show you all my love
I wanna be the only one
I know you like nobody ever, baby

Its nothing to write home about,

I never gave a second thought to any hidden meanings to the song, in fact I quite like it, you are just reading too much into it. Pretty awful video though, The Boss is no actor I'm afraid.

Is there a hidden meaning in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers:

"What I've got you've got to get it put it in you"

    ?

    I wholeheartedly agree!

Why on Earth should this song be banned, if this is all anyone has to be worried about you should be happy, dont take it up so literally! Maybe he means that her dad cant make her as happy by being the main man in her life, he can give her things her father cant, whatever. God why are we even analyzing this its nonsense!!

Hmmm, What radio station has 1984 Springsteen on heavy rotation?

Anyway, I've done some looking around on the net to see if I could find Bruce's explanation of the song, without any luck.

However, a look back to his previous album, 'Nebraska (1982) does shed a little light on this. It features themes like serial killing, murder, envy, loss, mafia coercion etc without attempting to glorify them. This was Bruce at his blue collar best. 'I'm on fire' was written as a homage to Johnny Cash around the same time, but Bruce decided not to include it on 'Nebraska'. (Cash actually recorded a version of the song himself). So maybe Bruce is singing about lust for an inappropriately young woman, and maybe he isn't. Whatever the reasoning, Bruce isn't trying to make the actions of the man in the song acceptable.

All the above is just a personal view as a Springsteen fan.

I agree. Do you think that Gilbert O' Sullivan would have gotten away with writing a song like 'Clair' in 2006? I think not!
