PowerBook HD backup / reinstall

    Hi all,
the hard drive in my PowerBook seems to be on its last legs so I'm going about backing up my stuff and then replacing the drive in the laptop.

I've a Windows machine so I figured the handiest way was to turn on Windows Sharing in OS X and just transfer the data via network cable to the PC, so I've done that and have the important stuff saved already.

I was wondering if there's a handy way of grabbing the applications from the Mac? When I'm browsing from XP, I can get into the Library folder but don't see the Applications folder either in there or in the previous level. It's not a big deal, I just thought it'd save me some time when I'm faced with a clean install of OS X.

Other than that, are any of the folders in the library particularly handy to backup, like Preferences, and if so, is it save to transplant them back into the new Library folder?

    Thanks for any ideas!
