Are there any nice guides out there to setting up a dish on the roof. I've never done anything like that before and it seems dangerous. Also I've no idea about drilling holes in the walls etc.

Depends on what satellite you would like to receive. Does it have to go on the roof? Is the gable or back of the house not enough? Normally I would use a 10mm drill bit and 8mm by 50mm coach screws with plugs for any dish up to 80cm's.

I guess it could go on the garage at the end of the garden. It's a south facing house so it'd be best on the roof. I also want to put up a regular RTE antenna while I'm at it. I was more looking for advice on what to expect, slippy roof? Can I just walk along the sloped part after I get to the top of the ladder at the side of the house etc.

You'd be best getting the lend of a roof ladder. Walking up the roof without one isn't wise, especially if it has the flat slates - they're very slippy even when dry!

Personally, if you've never done it before and are unsure about drilling holes, i would leave it to those who know exactly what they are doing and have all the right gear with them.
If you consider a roof dangerous, i wouldn't recommend going up fixing a dish on it.
For the sake of a few euro....i know a very experienced installer who dropped 7 foot off a boiler house roof to his tragic death.
