What was your Fav Commodore 64 game

I was on another topic recently and it got hijacked by the Commodore 64 so I thought why not start up a new thread where people can go down memory lane and tell us their fav games.

if you want to find C64 gmes try here http://www.gb64.com/ and try and get a screenshot if you can so we can all see the game in it glory.

1 of my fav games was Hero Of The Golden Tailsman
it was very ahead of it time as a 2d platform game and has since created clone games such as Another World and Flashback. With over 100 levels which you could decide which to explore it rocked the law of basic game design on the Commodore 64 of that time.

The two games which I had a fondness for were:

    Short Circuit
    short_circuit_the_hit_squad.jpg

    short_circuit_02.gif

Probably because I liked the movie so much 'Johnny 5 is aliveeee' :D, that pic you see above was of a hard level, there was another robot there that would mimic your moves so you couldnt get past him, grrrrr

And of course, 'Spy Vs Spy', what a great game:
    spyvsspy.gif

    Spy_vs_spy.gif

Collecting all the bits of the rocket and then flying off in the end, before electrocuting, blowing up and dumping buckets of water on your opponent of course :D .

Oh, and Batman was a pretty good game too from what I could remember half decent graphics and a cool loading song!

My absolute favourite was New Zealand Story, I bought Taito Arcade Classics for PS2 just for that game, I rate it as one of the best platformers ever. All the different weapons and especially the vehicles were so much fun.

    new_zealand_story_03.gif

Another favourite is Valhalla, my first open ended RPG! It was fun haggling with computer characters and getting them to fight eachother, as well as starting random fights by throwing food at people.

    valhalla_01.gif

Other favourites include Mad Nurse and Trashman, the first of which had you collecting up escaped babies in a hospital before they found their way to electrical sockets and the like, while Trashman had you collecting peoples bins while avoiding getting run over, getting bitten by dogs and other such hazards. They don't make em like that anymore!

    mad_nurse_03.gif
    Trashman_1.gif

Oh Chase HQ was a great car chase game... I used to love football manager, as simplistic as it was. Boulderdash, Silkworm, NEXUS, Stock Car Racer, the more I think the more games come to me!

Edit: I can't velieve nobody's mentioned Microprose Soccer! It just occurred to me, probably the Commodore game I spent the most time playing. Had to love those realistic weather effects!

    Flimbos Quest!

spy vs spy and Rockstar Ate my Hamster were another 2 classics tho I hated having to load in the rockstars as it took forever to get the band together.
I think the C64 was my far the best out of all the micro computers of its time even tho it wasnt the best in spec.

Who could ever forget the tape loading, sometimes I'd load a tape for an hour or two, and then at the end it would say "Tape error, please rewind to the start"....

    Ninja Commando
    GG sisters
    Wonderboy
    SEUCK

GG sister I always wanted that but it was taken off the market as it was too close to the Mario Bros games.

The Boulder Dash series was great too and any clones of it to date on the pc or other format have not be able to match it.

On another note, is there a legit C64 emulator availibe anywhere?? I'm in C64 mode now :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 282 ✭✭matu

Yes I have one but is it ok to post them in here?
ahh good old Green Beret when you got so far in the game yoou had to switch the tape over and enter in a code you got at the end of the first side to continue on, which meant once you had the code you never had to do the first few level ever again.

also did anyone here know that Sim City was released on the C64

here is a review I found from one of the old magazines that I use to read of Impossible Mission

    shaft.gif
    Impossible Mission
    1984 Epyx
    Programmed by Dennis Caswell

(excerpt) "I have just entered what appears to be a living room ...(static)... peculiar. All of the furniture seems to be on catwalks high above the floor... not sure how to get up there ...(static)... I can see a fireplace and a sofa directly over my head... how can anyone live like this? Hold it ...(static)... I think a robot may have seen me... aaarrrgh!!!" (transmission terminated)

Did you ever play a computer game during your childhood that took you in and cut you off from the real world, where you ceased to be that sniveling little brat your Auntie always cursed and actually became a computer game character, stuck in a complex, intense storyline, battling against the clock to save the world from certain destruction? Well it happened to me on Christmas Day back in 1984 when my Grandma, of all people, bought me what I consider to be the best game to ever have appeared on the C64: IMPOSSIBLE MISSION!

After getting over the fact that my Grandma actually managed to purchase a computer game, I ceased to exist as a young innocent boy intent on playing football in the garden, and became Special Agent 4125, entrusted with an urgent mission to save the world from an evil plot to destroy it! My life was never the same again...

In the months to follow, simple parental phrases such as "James, will you please set the table for dinner" and "Erm.. James you've got school in the morning" no longer had any meaning to me. I was far more concerned with how I was gonna get past that devious human-seeking robot that was guarding the computer terminal which I needed to get to in order to temporarily shut down all the robots so that I could create just enough time to search the remaining items in the room giving me the chance to find that elusive puzzle piece needed to obtain the final letter of the secret codeword that would give me access to Elvin's underground lair so that I could destroy him and save the world from nuclear holocaust before I ran out of time!

    DOSSIER:
    Elvin Atombender

    Sex: Male
    Race: Caucasian
    Height: 5'4''
    Weight: 120 lbs.
    Hair: No Eyes: Yes
    Traits: Avoids people, hates
    animals, likes M&M's

Needless to say, this game had a profound effect on my childhood, as I imagine it did so many others. It oozed style, atmosphere, gameplay, strategy and addictiveness. Everything about the game was brilliant, from the "Top Secret" documentation booklet that came with the game, to the spine tingling speech synthesis when you entered certain rooms. I don't think anyone who ever became Special Agent 4125 will be able to forget those immortal words "Destroy him, my robots!" and... "Another visitor! Stay awhile! Staaaaaaaaaaay foreveeeer!!!". Sheer class.

So what's it all about then? Well... you've probably realised by now that some bloke called Elvin has been a bit naughty, nicked some missile launch codes and is holding the world ransom. Well it's your job as agent 4125 to stop him. The game is set in Elvin's underground lair - a collection of robot-patrolled rooms connected by a series of corridors and lift shafts:

In order to defeat the mad professor, you must search all the rooms for special puzzle pieces that will eventually give you the access code (if you can solve it) to Elvin's secret lair, where you can beat the crap out of him and become a hero. Each room in the underground complex houses several items of furniture or computer equipment which must be searched...

Searching these items is not easy however, as Elvin's pesky robots are guarding them with their lives! It takes skill and timing to search all the items without being zapped by one of these robots.

    Elvin's Robots
Height: 1.57 meters. Weight: 67 kilos.
Armor type: ablative (AC: -4). Vcc: 5 megavolts
    Weaponry: high-voltage ionic plasma generator
    Energy reserves: 3.14 megajoules (estimated)
    Maximum angular velocity: 1.2 megaradians/fortnight
    Longitudinal velocity:
    Alpha class: 2.5 x 10-8c. Photovoltaic threshold: 0.12 lumens
    Beta Class: 1.2 x 10-8c. Entropic conversion rate: 2.71828 ergs/nsec
    Gamma class: 5.9 x 10-9c. Thermionic coefficient: 6.07 therms/hour
    Omega class: 0 c

It also takes some planning as each robot has it's own unique characteristics... Some are smart and can sense you coming, some are fast and will charge if they see you, some have lasers that cause instant death if you get caught in the stream! The best way to avoid them is to first figure out what they can do then base your navigation and search tactics around that. Sometimes the only way to beat a robot is to stay searching an item until the last possible moment and then run very quickly as it chases you away. Advanced players might use a flashy jump-search-jump-search-jump strategy... risky but impressive if you can pull it off! :)

On certain screens there is also a black Orb that follows you so you can't keep still for long; one touch from this baby and you're history. The only way you can kill it is by manouevering it into the path of one of Elvin's robots...

The odds are stacked against you right from the start: 32 rooms to search, 36 puzzle pieces to collect, 6 hours to do it in (each time you die you lose 10 minutes), irritatingly clever robots to avoid, a maddening puzzle to solve, deep chasms to avoid... the list goes on, but you do have one or two things to make life a bit easier: To start with you have your personal computer which, as well as letting you fit the puzzle pieces together, can also give you hints as to how to solve the puzzle:

Also, when searching for puzzle pieces, you can find what's known as "Snoozes" and "Lift Inits". Snoozes are a really cool thing that temporarily puts the robots in a room to sleep, so you can walk right past them without snuffing it. Lift Inits reset the lift platforms in the room so you can reach areas you previously couldn't (because you bodged up by falling off a ledge or something).

There are also 2 special "code" rooms somewhere in the complex where you can attempt to win more snoozes and lift-inits, but it's not easy and get's more difficult each time you play it:

Impossible mission is a game that takes you in and doesn't let go. The atmosphere is amazing, the sound effects are perfect... hearing your footsteps echo in the corridors, hearing all the mechanical sounds of the robots, the frightening laser noises, the scream as Agent 4125 loses his footing and plummets to his death, listening to Elvin's evil laugh as you realise you are beaten again... every sound effect fits it's purpose to perfection. The graphics are nothing special (except for the main character who has fluid sprite animation and looks really cool as he runs and somersaults over the robots) but again they are effective. The other amazing thing about this game is that if you eventually manage to complete it, when you restart it's completely different! All the rooms, puzzles and robots have been rearranged! Epyx, you were just too good.

Did Elvin always get the better of you?
Could you never get through that blue door?
Do you wanna see see him suffer?
Do you wanna hear him scream?
Then click here to see the end sequence!

What else can I say about this classic? One thing for sure... if you never played it as a child, I feel sorry for you, but I also envy you as you now have the chance to discover it all for the first time! What are you waiting for? Download it now!!! :)

    Remember any of these?
(Click on an image for a brief synopsis of each room)

    The best bit:
For me, the best bit was running around the empty rooms mocking the robots and laughing when I had solved the secret codeword and had plenty of time left. Oh yeah, I also enjoyed searching the toilet so that my character looked like he was going for a piss.

    The worst bit:
My Mum telling me it was bedtime.

Well, that's all you'll get out of me. The rest is up to you. After all, saving the world isn't supposed to be easy.

Hawkeye, Armalyte, Flimbo's Question, Creatures 1&2, and Mayhem in Monsterland - purely because it generated more colours than the C64's palette actually had.

Anything by Thalamus. Oh, and New Zealand Quest.

My 3 fav games that I can think of right now are Microprose Soccer, Rick Dangerous and California Games.

I was lucky enough to have a cartridge with Microprose Soccer and Rick Dangerous on it, super fast loading!!!

Pity California Games wasnt on cartridge, on tape it took a good while to load because each seperate event was loaded seperately.

    Gauntlet_III_v2.gif

Ahh how did I forget this one Gauntlet, as was said about the palette above (C64 only had 16 colours) Gauntlet was the first game to display more than 8 sprites on the screen at anyone time. it somethimes had 30 which was really pushing over the 8 limit.
normal if you pushed this far the sprites would flicker but in Gauntlet it managed to over come this and only started at the 30 mark to show this .

did you know this was the first game to con arcade players as it never said it had an end and people playing it always wanted to see how far the game went, but it just continued in a loop after 150 levels but to make it more confusing the graphics would change so that not one level looked the same to the eye.
they must have made some money of this game.

Never had a C64. I had an Amiga 500 and later even an Amiga 600 before getting my first PC late in life. Perhaps around 1997 or so.

One of my songs was used as the soundtrack for a C 64 game called: "Teldor IV" but I have never even seen it

Any of ye guys remember a game that released for the C64 involving a circus? I.e. you had to do circus tricks like dropping into a little cup from a height, throwing knifes and other various ehh....clown things?? I remember we had this game in cartridge format, so it plugged into the back of the C64 rather than using a tape.

    Any ideas?? :)

    Paradroid FTW!
Probably one of my favourite games ever, I wrote a review of it for a now-departed games site. I loved the balance of risk and reward, the way the greater the difference between your bot and the target, the harder it was to take, but usually still possible with a little luck and skill.

Also Turrican 1&2, Rainbow Islands, and the umpteen Dizzy games.

I remeber playing Aliens on itthere where 2 versions one where you had to land the ship at the beginning which was like 5 mini gmaes in one and another where it was kinda 3d and you had to go through a maze of room to try and find the queen with her eggs.

If I had to choose one it would be......nah, I can't only pick one!

Last Ninja 2 (possibly my favourite)
Microprose Soccer (Ireland wins the world cup:D !)
    Ghosts N' Goblins
    Pitfall2
    Booty (Platform pirate game)
    Choplifter
    Platoon
    Ikari Warriors
    Uridium
    1942
    Double Dragon

All class, all brilliant, all fun...I wish I was 10 again :D

EDIT: Forgot about Zork, the text-only adventure game - brilliant!

No one has mentioned Myth - History in the Making yet!

    Myth_-_History_in_the_Making_%28Cartridge%29.gif

That one totally consumed me and drove me to read lots and lots about ancient mythology.

It had so many great bosses in it as well... It was also rock hard.. I could never get past the Egyptian level, if you were off by just a pixel you'd end up being sliced up into pieces. I managed to complete it on the much easier Amiga version that came out some years later though.

Ha, now imagine doing it with a 5-10 minute wait between levels, during any of which the game might randomly decide to stop loading, so you have to load the whole thing again and start from scratch through no fault of your own. I still don't know how I had the patience to finish that thing.

Yep, played all of those. I really loved Flimbo and Ghostbusters, even though I never seemed to get anywhere. I could drive around the city and catch slimers, but I couldn't stop the Marshmallow man from stomping the city and wrecking my profits(How could they charge me anyway? Ghostbusters was a private enterprise. If I have a rat problem, I hire an exterminator, I don't sue one).

Also, sorry but Street Fighter 2 on the C64 was atrocious, there was little to no difference between characters speed or strength, they were all indistinct clouds of pixels anyway(except comedy midget Balrog) and it was loaded with so many bugs I think they were working off one of those bootleg arcade machines where characters use the wrong fireballs and float into the air.

Can't remember exactly how but I do remember I could win that game with ease. I think the trick was just to load up on traps BUT not to respond to every call for the GBs. Just answer the slimer calls that were close to your current position (ie spend the minium amount of time on the road)

Also one important was of stopping the MMM was to vaccum any ghosts that appeared during the driving sequences.

Thanks, I may dig out the game later and have a try, but I think what I'm missing is hw to reach the endgame. Do you need to earn a certain amount of money, or do something with the lock and key things that appear, or something? Any ideas?
