Contemplating a DS Lite puchase next week. Advice please

I'm thinking about picking up a DS next weekend. I'm out of the loop with regards the DS and I was looking for advice on which two games to go for. Something to justify my purchase. I won't be able to afford any new ones for a while so I'd be looking for a couple of keepers.

I've only just realised that Mario isn't out until the following week, which is disappointing.

I was thinking of picking up Brain Training. Looking on CDWOW I saw:
    • Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How old is your Brain?
    • Brain Age
    • Big Brain Academy

Which is the one to go for?

    I was also considering

    Metroid Hunters
    Tetris DS
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time or
    Advance Wars: Dual Strike

or do I just wait for Mario?

I also assume Play.com is the way to go for games?
    Thanks for any advice.

I can't speak for the top 3 games, but out of the bottom lot the best is Advance Wars by a country mile, it's close to the best game on the system, fantastic single and multi player game with huge replay value, It's a must for any ds owner really. Also if you're not too bothered by the concept of getting a lite, you could get a standard ds for cheap-they should drop in price when the lite comes out-the lite is a tempting little device though, I've already sold my bog standard ds to get one next week :)

I buy my games in smyths most of the time, but mainly because I'm crap with money, and I don't like to wait. Online I used to buy mainly from amazon but they don't ship to ireland any more, I was never too pleased with either play.com or cdwow.ie-I don't think I've gotten a game from either of them in less than 2 weeks, BUT my bad experiences in the past doesn't mean they haven't gotten better....

Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How old is your Brain? is the version to go for. Its the newest version and is the European version.

A friend of mine has Metroid for €30 if you wanted. Its brand new and in mint condition, he didn't like it. I thought it was excellent. Have a review of it done if you want me to pm it to you.

    Thats the 'proper' one.

    I [heart] the following:

Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain?
    Pheonix Wright Ace Attorney
    Mario Kart DS
    Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (my brother's reccommendation)

I hope to get a Lite too. Just trying to decide between black or white.

I'm thinking about getting one too. If I do, I hope I can get a black one, I don't really like the white.
I reckon I will/would try and get the Mario RPG first and foremost, then maybe one or two out of Phoenix Wright, Brain training, Hunters, Mariokart and Advance wars.
    EDIT: ...and Animal crossing

I didnt really like advance wars dual strike tbh but I love Mario Kart and I'd probably get Metroid Prime.

You can get most games from CDwow for about €30 so thats €15 euro cheaper than shops.

    edit/ http://www2.cd-wow.com/nds_cat.php

Also it depends on whether you have access to Wifi.Do you?

Edit again/ Rub rabbits for £15 is not too bad and also Mario 64 DS is also worth a play if you havn't played the original, indeed even if you have!

not a fan of advance wars here either.
Mario and Luigi is PIT is great even if I still haven't finished the final boss battle yet, it goes on for an age.
    Brain age is pretty cool.
Mario Kart has to be the best on it.
Wifi and Broadband will make it a whole new experience too.

Get your games on Lik-Sang for good savings too.

Yup, agree with the above get Dr. Kawashimas Brain Training and Metroid Prime Hunters, great pieces of software to show off your new system, to crown it off though you really should buy New Super Mario Bros., it's wonderful!

    Thanks for all the feedback.

I think I'll go for Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain? when I buy the DS and then order Mario online.

I can't really afford many more games at the moment. I can't really afford a DS either but I know if I walk past somewhere stocking a DS I won't be able to resist.

Pretty much every game mentioned I'd like to play but I'll prob go for

    Mario and Luigi
    Metroid and
    Advance Wars DS

after that. Have Wi-fi too so Mario Kart would be worth an investment also. So many games so little money :(

Xtravision & Gamestop are my only purchasing options. I'd assume they are much of a muchness in terms of price?

Been a long time since I bought a game in a shop *shudder*

Metroid Prime and Mario Kart are great online.Enjoy.

As for prices games vary €5 or €10 euro in most shops so shop around.

We got ...How old is your brain today and its excellent. As I type herself if busy with it..what it does show is that the character recognition on the DS is excellent. I was messing about drawing numbers and it could recognise them no problem from tiny ones to ones that looked weird...

New Super Mario Bros. is a must. I picked up a DS a week ago and it already far surpasses the psp. Mario Kart is a huge title as well, brilliant game.

I found MPH (Metroid Prime) a little boring. Can't wait for new Mario Bros.

I just got Phonix Wright and that game is good craic. The finding clues and courtroom gameplay makes it keep your interest as your never doing one of the two things for too long. They already have 2 and 3 planned for release to Europe of this title and there is a fourth in Japan aswell.

Advance Wars is an incredible game aswell.

Mario Kart is must own for any DS owner.

Super Mario 64 DS is okay.

Resident Evil if you've not played the original.

Those are some of my recommendations for games.

Alas, monetary constraints prevented me from getting a DS lite at the weekend.

Hopefully I'll get one on Friday. What it the likelihood of a a New Mario Bros. bundle on the day of release?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭bush

    My top 3

    Mario Kart
    Meteos
    Osu Tatakae Ouendan

I don't know of any specific mario bros bundles, but some shops have a lite + any game for blah type offers so you're bound to save a few pennies.

My top 3 so far on the DS would be:

    Meteos
    Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time

Quite a few more games that I really enjoyed (Phoenix Wright, Polarium, Metroid, Super Mario 64) but they'd be the 3 best. I want to import Ouendan some time soon, plus I want to get Final Fantasy III as soon as it's available in the US. I'll definitely be getting Super Mario Bros on Friday now, can't wait!

Xtravision had no bundles last week so you'd be better going to Gamestop. have a look at http://www.irishgamer.ie/features.php?id=5&page=1 for details of bundles and offers.

    Thanks, good article.

However the line where you say:
Of the bundles on offer, we felt that Gamestop’s was easily the worst.

dosen't exactly fill me with joy.

Might just go with a DS + Mario + a free copy of rayman

when u trade old ds, do u need the box and charger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭Puck

Just the charger. The box is nice but not needed. Oh, and a stylus of course.

    some of my favourites so far;

Meteos (addictive bastard of a game!)
    Castlevania DoS
    Mario Kart
    Phoenix Wright

Trauma Centre seems fairly cool so far... it gets fecking hard a little quickly though:o

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,904 ✭✭✭parsi

Got mine this evening - lovely piece of kit. Nice bright screens. It was enjoyable playing Mario Kart with the young fella. He's chuffed because he now has his own DS...

Brain Training is definetly worth a purchase but considerer the following:

    Must Buys

Mario Kart DS - the best title on the system, I'm still playing it six months on. Wifi is fantastic too.
Animal Crossing - But only if you have Wifi. Very addictive, charming and funny game. Nothing beats visiting other peoples towns
Metroid - If you're a Metroid fan you'll love this, much improved on the disappointing MP2 Echoes. Wifi is fun though even if some players are very cheap

    Maybe's

    Phoenix Wright
    Nintendogs
    Kirby
    Trauma Center

Sonic Rush is also well worth checking out. Best Sonic game in the last 10 years.

Why? Do you work for Gamestop?

Sadly, I really did feel that their bundles were poor when compared to GAME, HMV and Smyths. Who's wants a copy of Rayman after all?

No, I've no affiliation of any sort.

Living in Wexford, Gamestop, Xtravision & Argos are my only option when purchasing a console.
I agree that it was a poor deal, hence my lack of joy.

I would head to Game if it was an option

MP2 is one of the greatest games on the cube, you should really give it another playthrough... (i always enjoy the metroid games more on the second playthrough)
in comparison, i thought Hunters was complete poo.
it's a diverting little blast, and controls fairly damn well, but just doesn't really deserve to be associated with the rest of the Prime series.

The single player is definitely poo compared to the cube games, but I'm quite liking the multi player. And I agree, echoes is not ****, great game for obsessive people like me :)

It really annoyed me the way it kept killing you straight away for falling off platforms on some levels though.

I'd recommend all of the following

    MarioKart
    Metroid Prime: Hunters
    Mario & Luigi
Trauma Center: Under the Knife (Hard but worth it)
    Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
    Advance Wars: DS
    Meteos
    Zookeeper

    I'm probably leaving something out.

Best game is Osu Tatake Ouendan, second best game is Advance Wars.

There are plenty of other very good games.

Is Osu! Tatake Ouendan easy to pick up for someone with pretty much zero knowledge of the Japanese lingo (of Kanji, anyway....)

Absolutely simple, it took me about 30 seconds from picking it up to working it out.
There are webpages out there that translate the whole thing, but there should be no need for that really.

Deadly game, not only the best on the DS, I venture one of the best I have played in years.
