Did anyone else just notice a very low flying Aer Lingus plane heading directly east over the Dundrum area at 13.20. It was very out of the ordinary. Never noticed any plane before flying that low and in that direction. I'm talking low enough to be able to make out the sign on the tail fin and the windows along the side.

    Very unusual...........

I happened across this webpage recently...
Gives accident / incident reports in Irish airspace... there's a few commercial aircraft that have been hit by birdstrikes...

Dundrum is near enough the Killiney NDB, where aircraft fly holding patterns when the airport is fairly busy. Given the Northerly wind today, they'll be landing on the roughly N/S runway, which means it wouldnt be unusual for them to be only a couple of thousand feet up at the bottom of the holding stack

I'd imagine that this is the case. Runway 34 is used quite a lot in fine weather for visual approaches, especially when the wind is calm or northerly. If the plane was an A330 then it would have the appearance of being lower due to it's size. It may have been on approach which meant it was not that far from the runway really.

Strange time for an A330 to be coming in. Usually they land them on 10/28. 34 is borderline too short for an A330. Its roughly 300 ft of altitude per mile from the airport on approach

Unless its one of the A330s theyre using on the Dubai route its unlikely that there was any A.L A330 arrivals in the noon.

    EI125 arrived at 1331 today from Shannon & O'Hare - 2.5 hours late. http://www.dublinairport.com/flight-information/live-arrivals.asp

I take your point about the length of 34 tho.

I'd imagine they do use A330s on the Dubai route but they arrive in Dublin at 0520h.

yep knew it, tis strange to see anything bigger than a Aer Lingus A321 arrive in after 11am or so....

I'd say so but I reckon it would take a lot less than 11 minutes from Dundrum to the threshold of 34. As you say 34 is a bit close lengthwise for a 330 so it most likely was on the downwind leg for a visual approach on 28 - OP says it was on an easterly heading. I don't know which runway is use today but the wind is quite still (11km/h varying from 260 to 120 degrees).

Was at home at that time and didnt notice it (Dundrum) are you sure it wasnt just more visible in the clear sky weather? How low was it?

Unless you were looking you probably wouldn't have noticed - the aircraft was on approach which means the throttles were practically at minimum so the aeroplane would have been relatively quiet.
