    Guys,
Hope someone can help. I applied some win updates to my system and the installiation was corrupted. Tried booting with last known good config, no luck. Tried repairing with XP CD, still no luck. I then installed a new XP on my second HD. My problem now is that I can't access my old Documents and Setting folder, "Access is Restricted" Does anyone know of a way around this?

    Thanks for the help.

    Steve.

Yea, the old HD is still connected, but my old Doc & Set folder is the only one I can't access. I can access every other folder.

They are set as read only, Even If I change them they keep reverting back to read only. I really need to access files in this folder, and it's starting to bug me....Thanks

weird, cause the very same thing happened to me just yesterday.
I haven't had a chance to look at it much yet but it was telling me that the my doc folder was empty when I check the properties.
But I presume this is just cause access is restricted some how
I was thinking about logging in as the administrator and hopefully that would fix it.

I had this problem about 3 days ago!!! really annoying.

xp home=you have to boot in safe mode, go to the folder you want to open, right click on it, hit properties, go to the security tab and it should have an advanced tab.on ownership tab there put your new account name in the box, put a tick in the tickbox(cant remember the exact wording something like taking ownership of all objects) and hit apply. hit ok onthat and you should be able to get into the folder

xp pro= the same except you dont have to boot into safe mode

to boot into safe mode press f8 a few times after the bios screen and select safe mode.

zep, i am guessing that u r logged into your new build as administrator ( or with an account that has administrative rights ) ?

    Right,
1 - I can't boot into the old install in any mode. So can't change any folder settings.
2 - I'm logged into my new install as Admin but still have no access.

try looking at the security / permissions further up.. ie : of the actual old drive as opposed to the doc and settings folder.......

you need to take ownership of the folder. Google will explain all.

Failing that, use a bootable linux distro to acces the information.

    Blackdog2....
All I want to say is, u just saved my ass.
I booted into safe mode on my new install and was able to change ownership of the folder that way. I now have full access to the files.
So once again thanks very much.
Thanks to everyone else who offered advice.

    One happy camper,
    Steve....
