Insurance for mopeds

I'm looking to get a moped before I go to back college(I know I couldn't afford a bike and it beats sitting on a bus for 4 hours a day). What is the best moped to get in terms of cost, efficiency and safety. My brother who is the bike nut in the family thinks I should get a 125 or one of the mopeds that looks liek an ordinary bike. What ones are there? What's the cheapest? Also what would the insurance cost? I'm 20 and it would be my first provisional. Can you reccommend an insurer?

There's a lot of questions there I hope someone can give me a few answers.

There are only two main insurer's in Ireland for bikes. I see that you are 20, so your choice has been whittled down to one, as the other only caters for over 24's. The other one is AON bike care which is run through Hibernian. Now I think this might have been changed, but I'm sure somebody here will be able to help ye out better.

Roddy apart from AON BikeCare who are the others and do you know what range of bikes (cc) that they insure??

Yep, it changed a year or two ago. They are a part of Axia now.

Well what ever you do. When you are getting your first prov. Mark down that you want an A and B. This will give you far better options later on. (I've only started driving a car in the last year of my Second prov) Get an A so you have the option to upgrade to a 250 if you want. What I can say to you is, seeing as this will be your first bike, get a second hand one. Use it to teach your-self (get lessons as well like) But just use it to get some expearance on it first.. and see if you like it. Alot of people seem to get a bike for the summer and then once the cold and bad weather starts, they give it up. So its best not to pay an arm and a leg for it.

There is only one other company, they are Carol Nash. They will insure under 24's. But they will need at least one years NCB. But if your on a Prov, they are likely to be more expensive than Aon.

I've just been told the bike I was thinking of is a Gilera DNA. Any good?

Do they insure 50cc scooters? Have one i use now and again for work - policy is up €183 Thrid Party from AON - full licence and 50% NCB. You reckon they could beat that?

@GDM, you're limited to Aon for first your first insurance.
I'd suggest you go to a couple of bike shops (are you in Dublin - can suggest a few, if they're not on the FAQ). Have a look at the various scooters - see what storage they have. For example, can you store a full face helmet under the seat - IME college lockers aren't wide enough to take them. Can it handle your bag (laptop?)

Lots of the shops can also give you an insurance quote. Suggest you go for A licence, in case you want to move up.
Also if you go training (there's been some other recent threads on this) you can qualify for insurance discounts. Provisional licence means a 30% loading; passing basic assessment by trainer gives you same quote as having full licence without the year long wait for driving test. Training might cost you the same as insurance but you still have benefit of the training.

They look like a smaller version of a motorbike, look better than moped alright, but all you are getting is a 50cc engine. I think the runner would be faster, and ye would probably have a bit better protection on it.

    See here

Ye'd probably be classed at a higher level insurance than a moped which could be faster.
