Hotmail and Outlook Express

Got a call from a family friend who is having a problem with his hotmail account. Now he's not great on computers so could be a pebtac issue.

He got a new laptop recently and tried to set up outlook express to check his hotmail account. Now I know Hotmail restrict access via Outlook to subscribers and I don't think he is one. And indeed this is the error message he is getting.

The strange thing is that he claims that on his old laptop (running Windows ME so presumably also running OE 5 and not 6) outlook still functions with his hotmail. Could this be possible?? Just want to see if anyone has an clues why it's working on one laptop and not the other before I go over and find he's just going about it arse ways.

    Cheers.

Make sure he's got his POP settings in correctly?

Well the error message coming up is something like "Hotmail will no longer work with Outlook Express). So I don't think it's a server related error.

I can understand why he can't get OE to work Hotmail as it's not allowed unless he is subscriber. I'm just puzzled as to why it continues to work on the old laptop.

This same thing has happened to me, it works as long as the account in OE has been setup, but if you try to setup a new one, Hotmail rejects.

I don't know why, and I wish I could see the technical reason behind it, but meh. I doubt you'll get it working.

That's grand. Just wanted to confirm it's something like that. I'll try and sort something out for him. Cheers Snappie
