Apparently, Edge magazine has a picture of some retro controllers (NES, Genesis, SNES) that can be plugged into the Wii in order to play retro games the way they're meant to be played.

    Now that's freakin' sweet.

We've all seen the nice little controller-thingies you can plug into the main wii controller, like the classic controller which can be used to play the old games with, or the 'gun' you use the controller into to get the real 'gangstah-feeling'.
Now, however, a picture has popped up tha reveals that Nintendo might choose another way for those wo wants to play the old games exactly like they were designed: with the old controller they were made for.

The British gaming magazine - EDGE - has gotten a sneak-peek at a bunch of classic controllers that can be plugged into the Wii [controller I assume? It doesn't say...] and I got a serious craving for all of them.

I figured this had to happen sooner or later; if not by nintendo then a third party.

Going by that pic they basically are the original controllers, which is sweet! Sure it'll be extra cost, but what's the point in playing Mario 3 on the NES if you don't have that "cut your hand its so rigid" nes controller?!!

Would be great if they made adaptors so you could use the originals!

i forsee one problem with this, if you are gonna play games off more than one of the virtual consoles and then you also want to play multiplayer - you are going to have a **** load of controllers lying about the place.

    :D

Ah well... lemmie see 4 Wii controllers (with nunchuck), 4 GC controllers, 4 N64 controllers, 2 snes, 2 nes, lightgun add-on for Duck Hunt... and your DS...

17 controllers... best clear out another drawer...

I'd say most people would have one controller for each old console and then if you want to play multiplayer, the other people would use the wii Controller to play the old games.

I have to wonder though just how many folk are going to shell out for their old games, especially as many of us still own most of them on the original systems.
For a lot of people the lure of playing BC kid on the Turbografx will be dulled by the eventual experience of playing the thing.
But then I guess I would spend money for Speedball 2, Micromachines and their ilk but it may be cheaper for me to just buy the original cart on ebay.
Still being able to play my GC games on the Wii does make sense, although I may have to rethink the purchase of a GameboyPlayer doohickey now!

The suggested price seems to be very low, a few dollars/euro; if that's the case of course they will, just like they do for Live Arcade (I'd say even more so in fact), and bear in mind that the Virtual Console isn't just for retro titles, it will also be used for small/arcade games like those seen on the 360

I doubt most people still have a working NES round. Some but not most.

I think Nintendo's biggest competition isn't their past consoles, it's the Pc and illegal emulation.

Although for many at this stage, just paying for them might be handier than trying to find a decent rom site.

They are also still working on improving the visuals in these games they've said. I can't imagine this being anything more than what you see on a standard emulator.

    I do :D
Beating PC emulation was a bit factor here I'd say, and making them look better, charging a low price and offering the original feel (ie controller!) is all part of making their way much more enjoyable than ROM's... it's a lot of hassle to get roms working (and then use a keyboard and mouse)... sure what's €2 for Super Mario Bros 3 as it was supposed to be played? :D

Okay that looks rather fake to me like this site did it themselves. I mean if they were going to release new controllers, they'd at least change the colour scheme to Wii's.

I think the Shell/Retro or whatever you want to call it controller (duel analog one) should be enough to package with the Wii. Let the third parties handle this kind of thing. If Nintendo do it they are just going to be underpriced by some third party doing it anyway.
