Ok apologies for the second new thread in AH (unusual quiet spell at work:) ) and suppose this could also be in All thing retro too.

Well back on topic but for the older members what do you wish was around when you were a kid/teenager that the kids/teenagers have now?

I'll start with camera/video/mobile phones. I'm 30 and when I was 13/14 we didn't have a house phone and I'd have to go down to the payphone to ring my mate on her house phone to talk to her. Now my 13 year old can "videocall" her mate anytime she wants and text her mates and talk to them on Bebo. Also she can text me from upstairs to bring her up a drink - cheeky. Suppose the flip side of this was I could get away with more messing around because my Mam couldn't check on me and did we gallavant (sp??) ;)

short hair. that way i would have blended in with everyone else and wouldn't have 20 year olds coming up to me in the pub saying 'you're that guy who used to have really long hair and was always on his bike. you're mad, you are'.
'I remember seeing you all the time when i was a kid. you're really fat now'.

Yeah I was to old when we went to Disney Florida, but to young to go drinking, meet wimin etc.
Epcot Center was cool though, as was Kennedy Space Center.

When I was young I wanted 1MB of RAM for my Atari ST which I "inherited" from my brother so I could play Frontier: Elite II and Another World.

Hmm.. as a teenager I had pretty much all I could ask for, but something money can't buy - the sense to stay away from my ex..

As a kid I asked Santy for something like these, but he left me these instead. Do you know what was 'great' about them? you could increase the size the older the child gets, they made a cheerful little ringing sound while you skate.. and if you are over the age of seven the velcro rips open and you fall flat on your face. They were a beating waiting to happen. Needless to say they were never used outside of the house.

    Orville The Duck...The real one...

Failing that, some sort of replica Orville, especially a life sized Orville...

Time for another try at eBay Orville...

You know what I wish I'd had as a kid? An older brother. If he'd spoilt me anything like my younger brother gets spoiled, I'd have been one happy kid.

WOW what memories they bring back. Those second ones were deadly (in a bad way). I was lucky and got decent boot skates that my Mam brought home from Spain. I wore them so much the stoppers at the front were almost non-existant.

Sorry but think you all misunderstood me because I meant what would you have liked as a child that wasn't around/invented back then but only kids nowadays have.

Another example I'd give is CD players. Remember the hassle of tape recorders and trying to rewind back to the song you want and taping songs off the radio. We used to make up our own radio shows.

Kids nowadays don't realise how easy they have it.

A Sega Mega Drive, I wanted one of them SO bad!!! Had to make do with a Sega Master System first though

Soda Streams werent all they were cracked up to be, the best thing about them when being a kid was pressing the button when there was no bottle in it to hear the farting noise :D .

...ahhh yes, jumpers for goalposts, etc etc.

My uncle had a Soda Stream in the 70's. The 'cola' it made tasted like fizzy water mixed with mud. The gas cannister it used looked seriously scary (like a mini-bomb) and looked like it might explode if you even tapped it.

As for the Amiga 500, I worked a 48 security shift *over Christmas Day* when I was 18 to buy one. Having previously owned a Spectrum, it was like night and day.

I'm not old, I'm just chronologically challenged.

Mobys and the Internet. I remember watching 'War Games' when I was 15 in 1985, and immediately trying to come home and 'make' my own modem by plugging the phone wires into the back of my Spectrum.

I did eventually get a modem for my Spectrum and even managed to hook it up to one of the mainframe computers in TCD to do my assignment at home one Christmas.

Secondly, anything electronic was very very very expensive in the 80's. Colour TV's were about 500 punts, the same for VHS recorders. That's about €4000 in todays money.

I wanted a vhs video recorder a day or so after we had bought a beta max, which was huge btw,Couldn't rent any tapes for it.I have a nephew who has a quad, a horse, every video game thingy you can think of and he's getting a big buggy for his birthday with a proper engine that sits two.
I had to wait untill my brother outgrew his bike before I got it, times have changed.

A Nintendo. My damn parents would never buy one for me!

Also one of those "Mr. Snowman" things, or whatever they were, that you put the crushed ice into and made drinks, or ice cream or something. You put stuff in and shook it around!

Heh, I had a casio one I think, but the best one was the cool water powered one I had in the late 80's/ very early 90's. That was cool.

For Christmas when I was 13, I wanted a Nintendo 64 (this was 1997). My parents bought me clothes, and to add insult to injury, they bought my little brother a Playstation.
    *was scarred for life*
They said then that I was too old for video games... nearly 22 now and playing more than ever!

I wish I had more confidence as a child and was able to stand up for myself.

But I wish we had mp3s when I was a kid. I remember I used to buy a new single on tape every weekend and I'd be overjoyed.
