Easy question.... (For you Maybe) AD Naming Structure

Seriouisly, my Brain not working today.......

    Question:

Within my AD Users group, I have mixed naming formats.
    1. Some Users are displayed with their firstname 1st and Surname 2nd
    EG). Joe Bloggs

    2. Other users are displayed with their Surname 1st, First name 2nd
    EG). Bloggs, Joe

I would like to use this second Naming Structure mentioned for all Users and was wondering if there was a way to set it up within AD to change all of the users to this Naming Format. Rather than change them each individually.

    thanks,
    AS

    What's an AD?

    Active Directory.

Sorry should have been more clear:

    Windows 2003 Server Active Directory.

I think the Naming structure is different in the 1st case as those users were on the system prior to it being migrated to 2003 Server.

I think it depends on how the user names are input when they are first added..

Right click on the users you want to change, select rename and input the format you require. You will be prompted to confirm.

DO NOT change the logon name, as this will bugger things up a bit.

Disclaimer - Boards.ie nor myself are not responsible if you fup up user accounts, etc. etc.

    And you mod Comp? ;)

You can highlight the accounts and press F2 to rename them. Then AD will bring up a dialogue where you can correct the First name, surname and Display name. None of this will affect their login id.

You could script it. I think I had a script that could be modified to do the above. Let me have a look at work tomorrow.

You can script it. ADSI scripting - I had one at one stage but I can't find the bugger. Google TechNet for ADSI or the MS Scripting Repository and you're bound to find one.

OK - I removed my laziness and looked myself. Something like this might help. General User scripts are here

Active Directory isn't really anything to do with programming - it's more server administration than anything else. Maybe we could do with a more suitable forum for this kind of stuff somewhere here?

Good spot Zilog. I just assumed that the link was to the Windows forum :D

Would Group Policys come into this?

As with windows there are always a few ways to do things.

Nope. Group policies are for applying user and computer settings on the desktop. What the OP is looking for is an easy way to change the AD user objects themselves.
