Anyone here work in IT?

Guys I'm looking to acquire some new contacts in the IT industry - I know a lot of people on Boards.ie are very experienced in this field and often work for themselves or many of the main IT companies in Ireland. I have recently migrated to the IT security business and am looking to network a little, discuss business opportunities and get feelback on my new project. I'd appreciate a PM if anyone is curious or in the same boat.

Obviously I'm not going to pimp but feel free to ask any questions or post suggestions here. As I'm kinda new to the industry, any advise on the big players in the industry would be appreciated. I know its quite a small group when you get in there, this is Ireland so nearly everyone knows almost everyone else. I'm trying to spread my wings with a few mainstream products, and often you get the best opportunities from mentioning it to someone, who then referrs you to a friend etc etc. I may also be able to throw a few usefull contats your way, you never know!
    Thanks.

This is a weird thread. It possibly belongs in the work forum. The weirdest thing is that it's a first post.

mrsecurity: You should know that first posts don't really carry too much weight because lots of people come on, post once, then never come back.

Another weird thing about it is how un-specific the question(s?) are.

    Is it just me?

Not just you Khannie,I find it a weird post for this forum also.
Basicilly you are looking to meet people who work in IT to help you get a job or a consultancy?
    What are your skills, qualifications?
    Have you references?
What work are you willing to do and what have you done in the past?
Why were you in before moving to security and what qualifies you for mocing into this field?

Either way-I hope this type of post doesnt become the norm in this forum-
    "Hi,
I am looking to get to know some IT people who may help me get a job"

Yea I'd agree it belongs in work/jobs forum.

I'd also advise posting in the Security forum if you are interested in IT Security, although "Get me a job" posts there will be moved to the Work forum also. ;p

Or it could belong to the humour forum: "Did you hear the one about the newbie who posted in the computers forum asking if anyone worked in the computer industry" :D

Yes, it is a bit strange. Though I suspect the intentions are well intended, it's just not the way we do things around here.

    More info, please mrsecurity.

Ok lads cut me a little bit of slack. I have posted plenty here before but because this is a work thing I would perfer to keep this seperate.
Sometimes I find vague questions get better results as if you are too specific and no one has exact answers, you get no replies.
Basically the IT industry is a relaitvly small game in Dublin/Ireland - if anyone is curently working in it or has contacts, and might be kind enough to help someone out who is new in the business, I would love to hear from you. However, I do not want to come across as simply trying to pimp for business - although that is an obvious priority, its not my sole aim. Anyone in my type of role (sales/development) is usually always on the lookout for contacts, as you never know who you meet may give you a lead or a helping hand in something you are doing. Obviously I am looking to find people to sell my product, but my product is also something that can intergrate nicely into a product portfolio of many IT companies.
For example: Today I went to a meeting set up in a similar situation, an intorduction from a friend of a friend (Johnny) who was working an entry level job in an IT company. We met him and his boss, his boss liked what we do, he now wants to do business with us, and now Johnny looks good for bringing in a new business parter. Win-Wini situation. If anyone reading this thinks they might be able to do somehting similar, please get in touch. If not, thanks for reading anyway.

I hope this makes things a little clearer.
    Cheers

Duplicate accounts!!! BAN HIM! BAN HIM!!! :p

Edit: I still think this is better off in one of the Biz sub forums. While it might be an IT business, it is still a business/marketing issue.

I've been working in IT for 18 years, out on my own for the last 8.

Not wanting to offend or anything, but I certainly wouldn't expose my clients to a randomer I'd just stumbled over in an Internet chat forum, especially not in the context of security.

I do appreciate the need for IT people to network, especially around Dublin, and I've gotten various ex-collegues work and vice-versa. But these are people I know both personally and by reputation.

Secondly, you're very very very vague on what product or services you offer, whether you're trading as a Ltd company, how long you've been operating for, etc etc.

Would you really want new potential clients to be able to read all your posts from the past number of years, and find out a lot of quite personal information? I'm sure you can understand why I went for a new account.

What I was hoping to come of this was for people to PM me asking for more information, I would tell them exactly what I do, and find out what they do, and perhaps after some time of telephone conversations and even meetings, maybe there might be an opportunity there to do some business, and make some contacts. If anyone is interested please let me know.

The products are to do with email & network security, nothing crazy out of the ordinary but unique in their own way.

    - yes this thread is probably better suited to biz forums, please feel free to move - thanks.

I've been working in IT for about 2 years for myself and like DublinWriter i wouldn't be too quick to give some of my business or detailed information to an internet chat / fourm user whom i dont know. Best you can do is give us a link to your website, tell us your services.

Thats absolutely understandable, but I'd perfer not to post details directly on the thread. No doubt I'd be shamed for pimping anyway....

MrSecurity get urself a copy of Computerscope and Irish trade channels, irish trade only magazine, lists all the trade big players and news of whats going on in the industry, would have a lot of relevant stuff to you and maybe some companies you can network with. As you can see from above I dont think anyones gonna help you too much, I had my own IT business for 4 years and never really managed to network well with other companies, they were either too snobby and laughed at small players or just not interested.

www.techcentral.ie you can register to get it there...

All the best with your new job.

I had enough of IT and wont be going back :)

And Computerscope is free. Plenty of info in it. A bit too vague for my liking.

True, or better still, get yourself a copy of the Golden Pages and target SMEs in your area.
