Verifying a backup??

Hey all, I have a server that runs a back-up every night onto a DLT tape. Is there any way to check to see whether the backup is working?? ie. Can I retrieve the back up from the DLT tape without destroying everything on the server??

a) The operating system
b) The backup software

...would be useful.

Your back up software should provide a log detailing what was/wasn't completed.
