IE6 has suddenly stopped working. Page cannot be displayed. Firefox is fine.

Any idea what could cause this?

Sorry I can't see the answer there... Anyone know how to fix my problem?

Ok, you're looking for a solution to a problem that you have given next to no information about. Its possible that the firewall is blocking IE traffic from getting out. Its possible that the server is for whatever reason blocking requests from IE. Its possible that DARPA are using microwaves to mess with your head to make you think that its not working when it in fact is. Some of those may be unlikely, but possible.

You're not giving us a lot to go on, so there isn't a lot that we can offer back in return. There is the executive summery what I asked you to read.

I think the point AW was trying to make is that a few more details are required:
What OS are you running? What error message comes up? Is it for all webpages? If it suddenly stopped working, what did you install/change recently? Etc.

It would also be nice to know whether this is only happening to one web page, or all web access. You know, helpful stuff.

Maybe you have proxy option ticked and forgot about it?

Thanks thats what I'm looking for.

I'm on xp home but nothing else is unusual really. Turning off my firewall doesn't make a difference. I can't work it out!

i would consider it good news myself firefox ftw

OK I've figured it out, its my firewall. Why it is blocking IE and not firefox I cannot work out though, but when I set it to Allow All Network Traffic its fine. Anything esle 'no page displayed'. I'll have to play around with he rules etc

Firewall might be configured to block according to application and not by port.

You clearly don't have a clue what your talking about. Sorry.

There is always other ways to sort a problem. Uninstalling IE isn't really that easy if possible under Windows XP, i take it, i'm guessing its XP.

I cannot see him mention getting the About:Blank page anywhere. He is getting a Page Cannot Be Displayed which is a totally different thing.
As irlrobins says, its by Application firewalls can black too, not just ports. It looks like it has blocked IE and not firefox.

I would uninstall and reinstall the firewall software. What is it by the way? And if it is Norton Internet Security - well i would uninstall and install a proper firewall. That causes nothing but problems and most times it cannot even uninstall itself.

well its not exactly time consuming now is it ??

So if it fixes th problem then happy days

and yes if it is the "about blank" virus it is the only known way of removing it , no known antivirus scanner can pick it up

No indication that it is the aboutblank virus. And it's not the only way:

just enter your browser in about:blank page, view source code option, paste the res..//...and so one...until the / the go to www.simplelogic.com/developer/urldecode.asp and paste the res..// then press the left button (clean...) it will decode the line take note off the ".dll" file. Then go to windows\system or winnt\system and put it to see hidden files, locate the .dll (it's always a different name.dll) and rename it too something.dll . Then reboot your computer and eliminate the something.dll file. The next step it's to go to regedit and use find the name of the .dll file and eliminate all the keys.

What I think Webmonkey meant that up until SP2 came out it wasn't possible to uninstall IE. It was only because of the anti trust cases been taken against Microsoft that they provided the ability to remove IE and other components of windows.

so ud rather do that than simply uninstall the app to fix the prob ?

For a long time, there was no uninstalling IE, thats the point. Sure there were people and applications claiming it could be done, but the majority of these were just dirty hacks that didn't do much besides hide access to it. It was always still there due to the way that it was written into Windows.

If u read all the thread then my reason why i said this would b clear:

    1.User said hes using XP
    2.Said Internet traffic is fine
    3.Said Firefox is fine
    4.Said Firewall is fine

Makes sense to assume thats its a virus , and thats why i suggest a uninstall knowing that this could b done

Yep, you're clearly an idiot when it comes to computers.

Just because something stops functioning does not automatically mean it is due to a virus.
    Now stop trolling.

Jesus your a bit of a rip off arn't you for a man that doesn't know what he is doing fully.
What irlrobins said about something stop functioning doesn't mean it is a virus is true.
Often it can be the case that if Firewall software stops functioning or if it didn't uninstall properly that it can still block applications from accessing the Net.

U can "roll back " IE to a previous version, u could run Microsoft "windows defender".. the possibilities are endless here !
