    i brought the root x over to one side. Leaving a on it's own
    got the common denominator of the 2 fractions, took out the 3, things cancelled and i was left with a=3 i think thats right maybe!!!!

    x-9= (<x +a)(<x - 3)

    multiply it out.
    square both sides.
    takes ages and gets really complicated but it works. there are other easier ways.
    I only wish i got it in the exam

  • chang x-9 to (rootX - 3)(rootX + 3)

    then cancel above and below

    and you're done

    ...square both sides? if you multiply it out you get:

    x-9 = x+a<x-3<x-3a

    9=3a
    3=a
