Alpine stereo problem

I have a 9812RB Alpine stereo in my golf for the last 3 years. Lately I've been having problems with the FM reception.

Basically it is difficult to get stations to tune in (even down home where I know all the frequencies) and the AF (alternative frequency) no longer works. I don't often listen to the radio anyway but this is so annoying that even if I want to listen to something it's nearly impossible.

I have checked the aerial connection at the back of the stereo and it's fine as is the aerial itself (well it looks ok).

Has anyone come accross something similar as I'm at a bit of a loss?
