    Hi all,
two questions. Firstly I am possibly moving to Galway, from Dublin, in the next month or two and was wondering what the broadband availability is like there. I will probably not be in the city, but a few miles outside.
Secondly, I currently use BT, anyone know what the crack is with leaving the service while still under contract??

I live in Oranmore (about 7miles from city) and am moving aay from BT. Service very poor. connection drops every hour or so.

I am moving to Metro. You will get Broadband in most of the towns, but the only way to know is to know where you are moving.

That site run by Noel Dempseys department is a DISGRACE , here is a specimen answer 8 miles from Galway

Want to compare the Broadband Services (in terms of price, speed, etc.) of these and other Broadband Providers?

All sat providers. Yet you can get ADSL in Moycullen and you can get Wireless in Moycullen but that fool Dempsey wants you to take his cruddy VSAT service instead.

    Magnet Networks (Leap) Magnetbusiness.ie
    Irish Broadband Breeze service
Eircom FWA, Yes they are live here just put the presure on and you'll get it!

Thanks for the feedback. I have no idea which direction or how far from the city I'll be unfortunately. However broadband availability will be a factor the re-location so with the above information I should be sorted.
    :D nice one.

sorry how is it "his" cruddy VSAT service? surely those are all independent companies??

His site recommends VSAT over all other technologies , it helps "him" to pretend there is "choice" in the "market" when in reality its a few cruddy VSAT services.

The DCMNR only updates its site about twice a year too. Moycullen , the example I gave, was DSL enabled in MARCH but this is not reflected on the DCMNR site at all.

    Check his other site .

Id listen to spongebob on Dempsy. He has a habbit of screwing things up. I remember his proposals when he was minister of education.

VSAT is not a broadband solution. Its horrible to use.

From having friends who are using broadband heavily in galway.

    IBB <<< REALLY BAD
    NTL << getting good reports:eek:
Smart telecom << Pending a serious test but exchanges comeing online (Eircoms fault)
Eircom << Dont like them but it works ok from reports

All these are city connections so milage may vary. From what i understand the outskirts of galway tend to limit your choices.

I asked BT this exact question a few months ago, actually I asked three times since they're a bit slow to respond to questions. Anyway, they say there's a €100 cancellation fee if you're still withing the contract. Outside the 12 months there's no fee. You also need to give 1 month's notice of cancelling.

If you were to stay with BT though and simply move your account to Galway you may not need to pay this fee. Of course, you'll need to know the phone number at the address you're moving to, have an Eircom account number and make sure the line is BB compatable before this will work.

On the leaving BT thing, keep all records of your correspondence with them on this. If you ring them, get the name of the person you're talking to. Keep any emails, copies of letters etc. Let's just say they're not the most efficient company in the world and even if you think you've cancelled your account with them, it's not unknown for them to not cancel things at their end and keep billing you.
